Can anyone offer a word of advice please? One of my Chebunkin has died and
another is showing sins of distress although I cannot see any obvious signs
of damage. The only clue I can offer is that the dead fish looked and felt
as if all the scales had been removed. The skin was smooth.
They live in an outdoor pond which is filtered. In this cold weather I was
not expecting any bacterial problems.

is the ice frozen over the top? do you have aeration in the pond? Ingrid

How large is your pond? It may be something other than bacterial disease.
Is there a lot of crud on the bottom of your pond? Dead leaves, twigs and
mulm i.e. broken down feces, missed food giving off toxic gasses? What is
the PH? Too low or too high perhaps? Has your filter been running all
winter mixing the warmer bottom water with the colder top water (very bad
for fish) or creating a current to exhaust your fish when they should be
near motionless?

I think you have answered my problem (at least in part,) The pump and
filter have been on all winter, mixing colder water with warmer and also, I
noticed last night that the internal light in the filter as not on. So the
UV light has not been operating. It would have been better if I had let ice
form over most of the top of the pond. The Ph is ok.

if the pump had been pushing the fish all over all winter, maybe that would be a
problem. but otherwise it is not a problem. many people run pumps and filters all
year, no problem. even waterfalls. you dont need the UV light in winter ... or
summer unless you dont like pea soup. it would NOT have been better to let ice form
over the top of the pond. better aeration without ice.
