I think you have answered my problem (at least in part,) The pump and
filter have been on all winter, mixing colder water with warmer and also, I
noticed last night that the internal light in the filter as not on. So the
UV light has not been operating. It would have been better if I had let ice
form over most of the top of the pond. The Ph is ok.

if the pump had been pushing the fish all over all winter, maybe that would be a
problem. but otherwise it is not a problem. many people run pumps and filters all
year, no problem. even waterfalls. you dont need the UV light in winter ... or
summer unless you dont like pea soup. it would NOT have been better to let ice form
over the top of the pond. better aeration without ice.
