How Long does spawning season last?

Hi:
I recently (couple months ago) got 2 goldfish, each about 5-6
inches long.
There are in a 55galllon tank.
One keeps chasing the other all around the place.
I'm  assuming that one could  be male and the other female, and  that
this is spawning behavior.
If so, how long does spawning season last?   Would it be better
to put a plastic "divider" in the tank until the season is over?
Is there any other reason to explain this behavior?
I got them a couple months ago,  and this behavior just started
in  the last  week or so.
    Thanks for any suggestions/advice.

Let them be. They will eat any eggs laid so chances of having fry is almost
nil.  Mine spawn several times from mid to late spring.

big water changes.  sudden increase in temp.  a female full of eggs.  all bring on
spawning.  his chasing helps her release the eggs.  check water quality carefully to
make sure there is no spike in ammonia.  you may not see the eggs,  he and she will
eat them if there is nowhere for the eggs to attach.

oh.  feel in the filter.  eggs and sperm = slimey filters.  even bumps on the inside
of the glass of the tank.

if she is sick, he could be chasing.  as long as she seems healthy, dont worry, when
she is tired she will hang in the water head down as a signal no more chasing.  that
is the time to put up a barrier.  Ingrid

I hear Ron and Galen last about 2 minutes tops and Gail and Jan and a
few others can go on for hours on end!
