Sick comet - what is this growth ?

pcmangler@googlemail.com - 18 Aug 2007 22:03 GMT Hi,
I have two comets in a 4 foot tank and one has had this growth on the head for about a year now and it's slowly getting worse. You can see pics here:-
http://www.fileden.com/files/2006/6/26/89819/DSCF0049.JPG http://www.fileden.com/files/2006/6/26/89819/DSCF0053.JPG
I've tried Myxazin and another general antibacterial, I've added salt to 3% and I've tried increasing the temps to 25 degrees C for a few weeks. Nothing at all seems to make any difference.
The fish isn't showing any signs of distress, but I can see this thing eventually killing it unless I can resolve it before it takes over the whole fish.
The water quality is generally excellent, pH, Ammonia & Nitrites. The Nitrates have historically not been so great, but not dangerous levels. The other comet in the tank seems fine.
Can anyone suggest anything please ?
Many many thanks in advance.
Kev.

I would give medicated baths a chance on the outside hope they may work (or if this is something else such as a virulent fungus or Flexibacteria). What I would use is Potassium Permanganate in a 30 minute bath at double recommended tank strength. Methylene Blue can also be used, but SEPERATELY. For more information about these medications, I recommend this article: http://www.americanaquariumproducts.com/AquariumMedication3.html http://www.americanaquariumproducts.com/Aquarium_Medication.html
Also I would not raise your tank temperature for this as this can worsen Flexibacteria (Columnaris), and even though I think it is a tumor, this is a possible diagnosis. See this article: http://www.americanaquariumproducts.com/Columnaris.html
Keep your water parameters here for Comets: *Ammonia/nitrites- 0 *Nitrates - under 50 ppm *pH- stable *GH/ KH- at least 100/50 ppm respectively

I asked you to explain what it is because I don't know. I have NEVER claimed to know everything about fish, never once! Sheesh, can't ask you a simple question. I "thought" you were an expert in Goldfish. I was obviuosly mistaken. And by the way, this nonsense **<< They still think by BAITING, harassing, belittling, slandering and in general trolling those they want to leave the groups, they'll drive them off. This same technique didn't work before but she though she'd give in another try anyway.>>**
Is just that. Nonsense. I am not "baiting you". I asked a very simple question. Of course I could have looked it up myself. However, that wouldn't answer anyone reading your post that didn't know what it was. I thought that if you gave an explanation of what it was, maybe others could learn as well. Again, I was wrong about you. Did you ever once take a second to think that maybe this person who you claim is "my friend and emailed you about some plot" is your old buddy Roy trying to start trouble. Think about it.

[quoted text clipped - 6 lines] > > Correction appreciated....I learned this as a different moniker. I do not think this is Carp Pox based on the steps to remedy the problem that have already been taken (and the picture as well!). Most agree (including two of the sites listed) that heat is a treatment and that this problem generally appears in colder months, often in poor water conditions as well. Since this tank has been heated, and I am assuming there are reasonable tank parameters and simply the picture posted I do not believe this to be the case.

BTW Search engines are not the answers to finding the best sites, yes they are helpful however they are in the business of generating revenue and often word of mouth will find more recent , up to date articles as many search engines have aging algorithms that often punish newer sites (Google is the worst here). I know this will draw some hate email from the Google lovers, but as someone who has been involved in SEO (search engine optimization); I will state that Google is NOT the best place for information searches (MSN and Yahoo will bring up more current info). In fact I a have been performing an experiment over the last two years with competing information sites and Google has consistently rewarded the more spamy less content driven site while dissing the better site and forcing searches towards Adwords, unlike Yahoo and MSN (which still are not the answer either)
Bottom line persons come to forums to learn rather than going to search engines that may or may not know where a recent, updated article that may properly answer their question is (the exception to this is the Yahoo Answers forum which is a disinformation free for all).

dr-solo@wi.rr.com - 22 Aug 2007 17:12 GMT it is likely one of two things. epistylis which shows up in warmer water and is cleared up with lots of water changes or lymphocystis, which is a virus and found in cooler water. I got a koi with lympho and frankly, it doesnt clear up, there is no treatment and it supposed to be somewhat contagious, but none of the other koi get it so I think that fish is susceptible. if your other fish doesnt have anything like this, then it is most likely lympho and dont worry.
once I was dining at this restaurant on the Hudson river and these huge carp were coming to the surface to be fed and I saw the absolutely ugliest fish on earth with lympho all over its mouth. obviously the fish was thriving even with the "warts". Ingrid
