I have upgraded to this tank with the bio-wheel. Is the bio-wheel better than say an Aqua Clear hob? I got 2 differing opinions from the store ppl. The manager said both are good. Clerk said Bio wheel is the best. In my new 5 gallon, I have a dwarf gourami, a tiny corycat, a baby honey gourami (he's so cute!) and an african albino baby clawed frog. They all get along fine and seem to love the bigger hex tank. I realize that when Kermit gets big, he will have to be removed before my fish become his lunch. I am testing ammonia levels every night, and doing water changes. My question is, if I keep doing water changes, will my tank ever cycle? The answers are going to be the same as before even with a NEW HEX tank....things do not change..................Why ask whats better after thew fact when yo already bought what you did. Enjoy havingto pay higher prices for filter media replacment and other odds and ends when an Aqua Clear is essentially free of additional maintenance charges or at least outrageous propreitary media prices. Evidently everyone here is going about it the wrong way and we are the ones that should be asking you how to do things. Of course your LFS says biowheel is better they get to sell replacment meida at oputrageous prices to unsuspecting fools that do not have a clue! I think your money would have been better spent if you bought a good book as recomended previously, instead of a 5 gal hex tank and bio wheel filter! No. I had a 2.5 gallon before this one. I can't have huge tanks with my limited space. The tank is pretty tall. So then whats your problem other than crowding fish into a tank that is much too small and taking advice of shop oweners looking to make a profit over what is really right. You had a bunch of folks tell you to go with a HOB filter such as whisper or aqua clear already so what part of that do you not or did you not understand? Not being able to keep a larger tank is one thing, but buying too many fish or the wrong types of fish knowingly is another. I don't think my tank is "crowded." Some ppl seem to swear by Aqua filters, and others, the biowheels. Since I've never owned an Aqua filter, I can't comment. A *Bio Wheel* is an ADDITION to the filtration system (a normal filter with mechanical filter pad to trap debris particles), NOT just what they use to filter the tank. It's NOT a filter. It's a place for nitrifying bacteria to grow on. It's addition surface area to grow bacteria on. That's all a BIO WHEEL is. It is NOT A FILTER. It does NOT CLEAN you tank. "Aquaclear" is a brand name of power filters. When you say "Aqua filter"....are you using that to refer to normal power filters that hang on the back of tanks (aka power filter or HOB filter) or a name brand of filter? The Aqua clear BRAND name, I was referring to. Then the "clean also needs to be capitolized............or else it looks like your refering to water that is clear................ FYI.the Aqua Clear hang on back power filter also has mechanical, chemical and biological filtration as well but at a lot cheaper price with no real need to buy the fitler carts for mechanical unless you need to use chemical on occassion, so there fore since it is not propreitary chemical filtration your able to find a lot cheapr bulk activated carbon or other chemical to use inthe generic mesh bag supplied with the AC filter. Same for biological portion.no moving parts to hang up or screw up, and they do screw up and hang up contrary to what your lfs may have told you. KISS.....Keep it Simple Stupid (and no the "stupid" is not aimed at you its just a common saying that is around, so don't view it that way) and that simple is achieved by bulk non propreitary filter media and substrate and chemicals and a lot less moving parts to deal with such as biowheels etc..... So care to expound on whyt your biowheel is superior to a much cheaper and simpler type of filter Lu? Inquiring minds want to know. Oh I know, because yuor inept LFS found a sucker that is now bound for ever as long as they are keeping fish to buy replacement media ona routine basis from them (Hopefully) as well as a larger (read) higher tank with more gallonage with the same footpirint as the 5 gal (sic) hex tank. I guess they seen a sucker when they seen you coming or else you just do not understand what is what and do not know how to differentiate between the right way and the LFS way which is really a sale ploy in most cases. But then again its your $$ so youyr very well entitlted to spend it how you want, but you can't say you were not told different and yet you always somehow happen to have so many problems that did not have to happen if you only listed to the advice given here by folks. You have less surface area with a hex shaped tank than you do a normal, rectangle shaped one. The tank's oxygen exchange is done at the water's surface. When you have less surface area (hex tank), you have less O2 being exchanged at the water's surface. When that decreases....the less that hex tank will hold. Meaning a 5g hex tank will support LESS fish than a 5g rectangle shape tank. The fact that you doubled the amount of gallons doesn't really mean much when you have a hex. This is why you're being told your tank's overstocked. no.. the biowheel is not better than something like a whisper with a filter bag and a container holds water if the electricity goes off. >I have upgraded to this tank with the bio-wheel.
