Lately I've been feeding mashed green peas to my goldfish. They don't seem
to be able to see the rather large pieces of mashed peas. They forage around
the bottom of the tank picking up pebbles and spitting them out as usual. If
they do pick up a piece of the pea, they will swallow it. Are goldfish color
blind?

Which better sense do they have, eyesight or sense of smell?

Good question. I suppose it depends on the type of goldfish. Bubble eyes amd
Telescopes
certainly have weaker vision that commons.

Just a guess, but I would think they probably can't see directly in front of
them (their mouth) since their eyes are on the sides of their heads and not
in the front like ours.  A lot of animals are like that.  They are supposed
to have a good sense of smell, however.  Again, a guess, but I would think
they rely more on their nose when searching for food.

According to a scientific paper I read several years ago, goldfish can not
see color.

I tested my goldfish today. On the right side of the tank I turned on a
color tv.
On the other side, a black and white one.

He seemed to like the black and white one more!
But that's probably because on the color one was a fish cooking show with
Martha Stewart
