Last night I was awoken by a very loud and strange noise.  Looked out
the window and saw two dogs at the guinea pig hutch.  So the mystery
as to what happened to the last two has been solved and they weren't
stolen as presumed.  This time thank god the piggies were inside and
safe.  They managed to get the wire mesh off this time too.

It's a pain because now the piggies will never be able to be in their
outside hutch unless I'm home.  I've called the dog ranger and
apparently they can come and set traps.  I'd like to string up the
owners by their balls just quietly.

Anyone have anything to offer?  How to deter dogs?  I'm keeping the
piggies inside now but I don't want our hutch to be wrecked again.

If it were cats, I'd know a way:  there's a system here you can buy to
protect your fish (if you have a pond). It is a simple water-canon, with
a motion detector. If something moves while the system is switched on,
it receives a big splash.
Cat's don't like water, so it works on them. But 'm not sure if the
piggies would not also be detected and get soaked...
On top of that, I'm not sure if a dog would be impressed by water.

I would first get my piggers to safety, then try to find out who the
owners are. If they won't cooperate, I would call the police again.

Hello,

It was so sad to read your post a few weeks back about the vandals who
hurt your piggies!  That is so upsetting, now if the vandals are dogs
I would definately set traps for them.  They obviously are either
strays or their owners just don't care where they are.

How about a chain link fence around the hutch?  I know here in the
states some stores sell chain link kennels for dogs.  The piggy hutch
would go inside and you can access it through the build in door.  They
are usually at least 4 to 5 feet high, which is plenty high enough to
prevent them from jumping it.  Maybe even put a lock on the door so
they don't accidentally open it.  You could put a tarp or something
over it to keep the sun off it it too.

Thanks,

Adam!

Yes I have been thinking of a similar thing actually.  I saw an aviary
on TV and thought it would be wonderful enclosure for my piggies.  We
keep them inside now unless I am home.  I have to do repairs on the
existing run today (due to the mongrels savaging it).  I'm also having
the ranger come out to set traps.  I'll keep you posted.

Dog ranger just arrived and dropped off a large trap. SO we will see
what happens.
Tune in for the continuation of the saga

I hope that, once caught, the dog will not be harmed by the ranger.
After all, it is really the owner who is to blame. I can't help it, I
just love all animals...

The ranger seemed like a nice guy.  He informed me too that dogs are
only doing what they are born to do - hunt.  He says if they can't
find the owners, they try to re-home them if possible.

I am sure you will catch the offenders....remember you said you saw two
dogs....so if the trap only catches one dog first time, your pigs wont be
safe until you catch both...

The bad news is that for every dog I catch, there will always be
another out there..and another...and another...
My piggies will never be outside when I'm not home.  I've learnt my
lesson.  The good news is that my partner has succumbed. Our girls are
in the lounge right now as I write this.  All tucked up in their box.
It's raining outside and we're all nice and cozy indoors.

Over my dead body I would box myself in like that. When I was a kid at
home our neighbors were a.shole asocials who had 2 dogs that shitted
in our lawn all the time. We finally planted bushes and that didn't
help a lot.

I'd either shoot the dogs or capture them. And if the owner didn't
collect after a wekk, I'd shoot them still.

But that is the kind of man I am.

But then the dogs would suffer because their owner is an a-hole.
Besides, people like that simply get new dogs; they don't care about
animals.

No, I don't think animals should pay for the stupidities of their
owners. You mentioned the US as an example, and I'd like to do the same:
they give severe penalties for animal cruelty. So the owner of the dogs
(who does not take proper care of them) would face the concequences, and
not the dogs themselves. And that is - to my humble opinion - the way it
should be.

Verger said what was on my mind when it was posted that the attackers
were dogs.  In the states I would definitely shoot the dogs if they
were attacking my animals.  I think most people in this group don't
live in the states so the gun laws may be a little more 'restrictive'.

I don't live in the usa and at one time I was much against their gun
legislation. I liked the super restrict Dutch laws. But now I see the
EU go undemocratic super state and my government follow the us lead
hoax of terrorism, instilling fear in the public for no reason than to
get support for the annihilation of global civil rights and liberties.

So I have turned around on my position and regard your amendment,
recently affirmed again to posess firearms as something we should
have. But we never will, the Dutch are a nation of cattle, bovine in
nature and we lost the right to own guns long ago. Not completely, but
very hard in  any case.

To own legal firearms is a dream. Gladly I would now take the
caualties of tyhat freedom to have a chance of fighting back when the
time comes.

Revolution is unavoidable. We live in a polive state, way beyond 1984
or Brave New World in many ways. And they are not done yet.

The only way to get our power back as people is to arm ourselves.

If you are in america, in some states apaprently, as I heard on a 911
call, it is legal to kill someone who is breaking an entry into your
neighbors house. Perhaps such or similar laws apoply to your state. In
which case a shotgun would help. You can always claim the digs
attacked you when you tried to scare them away.

If someone doens't have their dogs under control, they are free target
practise. f.ck 'em. defend your property and livestock. Should be a
good old fashioned western tradition.

It sounds like you either need a much stronger hutch, or a varmint rifle.
Or both.
