My Bun is sick!  Please help!

Hello all,

This morning when I woke up one of my four buns, Hoppie, was tucked
into one corner of her pen, mashed against the wall.  When i took her
out to see if she was ok, she could get around, but seemed wobbly on
her feet and had a definite veer to the left.  (She only has three
legs, having lost her right front leg about a year ago in a freak
accident, but can usually get around just fine).  She is not tilting
her head at all, and I checked her ears out for a sign of an ear
infection, but they look fine (no redness or discharge, they aren't
hot to the touch, and she is not scratching them or shaking her
head).  Since this morning, she seems to be getting worse as far as
stability on her feet goes.  She is really wobbly, and has rolled and
fallen a few times.  Her handicap makes her a little unsteady at the
best of times, but I have never seen her act so strangely.  Her
preferred position right now seems to be stretched out on one side, as
it prevents her from rolling/falling.  She is not eating pellets, but
tried to eat some hay when I put it in front of her.  She seems really
hungry,  however, when she stands up to eat, she has a few problems
sitting up because she keeps falling over, and she seems to have given
up eating for the time being to lie stretched out as described above.
She is not exhibiting any signs of being in pain, and is alert and
seems to be in good spirits.  She is an older bun (about seven or
eight years old) and I am wondering if she has maybe had a stroke?
Taking her to the vet right now is financially impossible as my
husband was recently laid off.  I am so worried about her, and
wondered if anyone has any ideas about what might be wrong with her,
how I can help her with eating/drinking, and any tips on keeping her
comfortable and prevent her from hurting herself.  Is there any over-
the-counter medications that I can give her to help her with her
apparent dizziness (such as gravol, etc)?

Please help!  we are very worried!

many many thanks

Lisa

See if your vet will work up a payment plan for you - your bunny is
seriously ill and needs treatment right away!

Lisa, this could be the start of pasturella in your bun from the
description you give.  My last bun, Mocha began that way, had no
balance, could not get up at all.  Get him to a rabbit savy vet ASAP
so he can be diagnosed and treatment begin.  In the meantime try to
keep him quiet, encourage food (maybe offer it by hand).  My vet
explained to me that everything is spinning as far as he is concerned,
hence the reason he/she cannot stand up right.

It is a very serious illness, if that is what your bunny has, and
quick diagnosis and treatment is very timely for him to get better.
If it is pasturella, it is a prolonged course of rabbit safe
antibiotics.  There are also some homeopathic meds you can give in
conjunction with the antibiotic that will help keep his system fight
this.  Several of us here in APR have used Systemajuve with success.
Beth, another APR'er in this group can tell you where to get it.

I hope it it not Pasturella and is just something minor, but from what
you described, this is how my bunny acted when it first began.  Hope
this helps some.

I'll keep your little bun in my prayers for a quick recovery.

we can not tell you how to treat what we don't know. you need to go to a
vet.. if you don't you could very well loose the bun. they can go very
fast.
those symptoms can be many things.  would not begin to guess what it
was. find a way to get to a vet. you need to asap!!!!!  this is meant to
scare you.. because. they can GO SO FAST!!!!!!

Lisa,
You will somehow have to borrow from friends, family, whomever, but this is
a vet emergency. You cannot possible see deeply enough into a rabbit's ear
to see infection. Something that comes on that quickly usually is an ear
infection. Cocoa had it, but didn't tilt, but was dizzy. Are her eyes moving
quickly back and forth or up and down?
I wouldn't give any meds that aren't for bunnies. Yes, the vet can give her
meclizine for dizziness, but you have to take her in. I don't see any way
around it dear. PLEASE take her.

I am not sure or informed enough to know what is going on with Hoppie, but
is sounds very serious. Please ask the vet if they can do a payment plan
as previously suggested. I will be praying for her and am sending healing
vibes. Please update us on her. Carla Liza and Jodie.

well, it is sad news for little hoppie... she saw dr. middleton today
and he thinks she has either one of two things... first and foremost
(and scariest) is a brain tumour or abcess that is putting pressure on
the part of her brain responsible for balance, etc, or it is an inner
ear infection caused by the dreaded pasteurella bacteria.   He gave
her an anti-inflammatory injection and a course of wide-spectrum
antibiotics (Baytril - enrofloxacin) to be given twice daily, in case
it is an infection, but he did not see any signs of an ear infection
when he examined her, and she has not been scratching or rubbing at
her ears.  She is also taking ibuprofen for inflammation and any pain
she may be experiencing, but she does not appear to be in any pain at
this point.  He said it won't hurt, and may help, since we don't know
if she is hurting or not.  A few years ago, we lost another of our
buns, Zeus, to a nasty abcess caused by pasteurella, even after having
the abcess removed and following up with a diligent antibiotic and
would-cleaning routine.  So either way I am petrified that we will
lose her.  He said that if it is an infection and not a tumour, we
would see some signs of improvement in 24-48 hours, but it would
probably take a much longer course of antibiotics before she was
totally recovered.  If it is a tumour, she is not in any pain right
now but as it grows it will put more pressure on her brain and we will
have to have her put to sleep to avoid having her suffer...  it is a
very sad day...   So far she seems to be eating and drinking ok (hay
and greens only... she has had two bites of pellets, but that is all)
and is peeing/pooping ok too.  Seems to be in good spirits, for the
most part, but I can't help but think that she must feel awful... we
all know what it feels like to be sea-sick, or a little too tipsy, and
not able to get your bearings... poor hoppie!

we'll just have to see how it goes, I suppose... i set her up in a
quiet part in our bedroom, in a makeshift 'pen' beside my bed with
rolled up towels as bumpers so she can lean against them and won't
hurt herself if she falls.  So she won't feel alone, we bring her out
into the living room in the day so she can see and smell the other
buns and feel like part of the family.  If anyone has any other tips
about how to make her comfortable, they would be greatly appreciated.

many thanks,

Lisa

oh, and yes, the vet is 'rabbit savvy', we have brought all of our
buns here for many years and they always give us the utmost in care
and treatment...

I'm so glad you were able to take her to the vet.

I hope we hear that she is feeling better in a day or two!

It sounds as if you are giving her loving care. I'm sure she appreciates
it.

Hand feed her and stroke the bridge of her nose and her cheeks, if she
likes that.

nasty things to a bun.. let's hope for infection.

How about an x-ray? I so hope the antibiodics work for her and she starts
to improve as he said in the next couple of days. Is Chicken still bonded
with her? Does she help her. Still sending healing vibes for Hoppie. Also,
Ronie on apr has had several disabled buns and could probably give you some
advice on how to keep her comfortable. Carla Liza and Jodie.
