Hello rabbit-folk!
My husband and I are trying to find the most economical way to provide
hay for four rabbits. I was wondering if all the good bun-owners of
apr wouldn't mind answering a little survey so we can see how other
people buy hay, etc. The more replies we get, the better, so please
take a few minutes to respond; it would be most appreciated! If you
don't want to post publicly, please send a message to my email. Thank
you very much!
The 'survey' consists of the following few questions:
1. Where do you live?
2. How do you buy your hay? (1-2Lb 'bales' from pet store, 40Lb
square bales, large round bales etc)
3. Where do you buy it? (pet store, mail-order, vet's office, farm,
etc)
4. How much does the hay cost (per bale)?
5. How often do you buy hay?
6. How many rabbits do you have?
Thanks for your time!

I started buying hay after my backyard turned grassless from rabbit
grazing and digging. Last time it cost $8 for a bale of horse hay
(timothy & orchard) from a Southern States feed store. Since I can
lift it I would say it's in the 20# to 30# range probably around
2'X2'x3'. It's about 20 miles away so about $5 or
$6 worth of gas to pick it up.

Hi Lisa,
I get farm hay from Ray's cousin Howard's farm for FREE! It's really good
timothy, brome with a bit of clover. He did bring us a Cocoa sized round
bale two years ago....that's how long it took Cocoa to finish it off.
Howard has been bringing us garbage bags full of it lately. Farm hay is
usually the cheapest and best hay to get. Just make sure they don't give you
old stuff that they want to get rid of.

NOTE - just switched to BunnyBales this last order and it does seem
leafier and less stemmy than the oxbow.

2. How do you buy your hay? 25 lb bale

4. How much does the hay cost with shipping? I usually combine it
with an order of pellets and maybe litter. I think on it's own, about
$45 w/shipping
5. How often do you buy hay? every three months or so
6. How many rabbits do you have? two with these statistics, we've
just adopted a third, so we'll probably go through an extra bale a
year.

When I had Wendy & Cartman with Hershey & Boo Boo I was buying orchard
grass from Oxbow. A 50# box would last about 5-6 months. I see if I
ordered it today it would cost me $70 - YIKES! When Wendy & Cartman
went to the bridge and we got Thelma and Louise I'd go thru a 50# box
once every 6 weeks. That being the case hubby, hubby has a friend
that bought a farm and started to harvest hay so i stock up in the
summer and then get from a feed store during the winter months. Now
that Thelma has passed, I'd say a bale last about 10 weeks.

1. Where do you live? N.Y. suburbs (Westchester county)
2. How do you buy your hay? (1-2Lb 'bales' from pet store, 40Lb
square bales, large round bales etc) I buy 9 - 14 lb boxes of hay
3. Where do you buy it? (pet store, mail-order, vet's office, farm,
etc) Mail only from number of places (Sweet Meadow, Oxbow, Farmer
Dave, are the main places). I have gotten it from horse farm and buns
didn't like it.
4. How much does the hay cost (per bale)? It usually works out to
under $2/lb with s & h
5. How often do you buy hay? I usually get hay from one place once/
month. I stagger it so I can keep different varieties on hand.
6. How many rabbits do you have? Two and they are big hay eaters and
we use hay in the litter box.

The hay was delivered in a plastic bag in a cardboard box which I kept in
the garage. It always smelled fresh. I think we got 2nd cut Timothy and
also ordered 30# bag of BBT and/or papaya tablets at the same time.
I never found any decent hay at the pet stores -- and just didn't have it
together enough to go scope out the bales available in horse country around
here, but that would have undoubtedly been far more reasonable price-wise
(just not as convenient as point and click ordering!).

No more rabbits here, but as my last one died in 2007, my info is still
valid.
> 1. Where do you live?
Los Angeles, CA, USA.
> 2. How do you buy your hay? (1-2Lb 'bales' from pet store, 40Lb
> square bales, large round bales etc)
In Plastic bags - 1/8th of a bale.
> 3. Where do you buy it? (pet store, mail-order, vet's office, farm,
> etc)
Feed store that caters to the local horse population.
> 4. How much does the hay cost (per bale)?
$3.00 per bag (no sales tax). => $24/bale, but I never asked for a full
bale, so maybe less.
> 5. How often do you buy hay?
Once per year when I had multiple rabbits. In 2006 & 7, no purchases for my
sole survivor.
> 6. How many rabbits do you have?
Zero. Had up to five simultaneously. They were all 1-2 pounders.
I also have 2/3 of one bag left over if anyone wants it.
