Hiya everyone don't know if anyone remembers me as I guess there are
lots of new people on here now, however myself and my lop Smirnoff
used to come on here a lot so hope there is still some people and buns
that remember us.  Anyway i need help/advice Smirny has really bad ear
wax,  he started suffering from this about a year ago and was given
Panomec injection for mites however this did not clear up the wax and
since then Smirny has been shaking his head and itching his ears
constantly !  i took him for his Myxo Jab today and the vet who has
seen to smirn since he was little (he is 6 yrs old now)  said his ears
were in bad shape and he was worried about it getting worse and
turning into head tilt (which as a reader of this site know all too
well is not a good thing)  he has given smirn a panomec injection and
given me Canaural ear drops to use 3drops twice daily.  Smirn is goin
mental scratching and head shaking (i can only guess how annoying it
must be for him)  he has to go back in a week to check his ears (the
vet let me look in his ears with the ear light thing sorry i dont know
the technical term and his ears were full of wax and a bit pussy!)
can anyone give me any advice about this and also about the canaural
as its worrying me a bit.   Also another quick one, smirn has been
overproducing Cecals and he has had problems with his gut b4, however
now he is overproducing cecals and getting the worst pooey bum which
is becoming hard and he needs to be cleaned weekly, the docs
prescribed a sachet of powder to add to the water but i have not done
this yet as i am very wary of stuff like this.  Any advice on this ??
Smirns diet is 4 different types of hay and excel lite pellets (uk)
he has veg occasionly carrots and kale etc but not too much as it
upsets his tummy, he also has a bit of normal lawn grass every week
when he gets his run in the garden (he is a house rabbit).  Well sorry
for the long message but hope everyone and everybun is well and your
advice would be much appreciated.  If any of the orignal
Alt.pet.rabbits group that sent me xmas cards a few years ago are on
here and are registered on facebook let me know and email me and we
can chat on there.  Thanks for any advice xxx

HI Lu,
Of course I remember you!

I'm so sorry Smirnoff is having these problems. How old is he now? A bunny's
gut tolerance can change when they age.
My advice is to totally cut out the carrot as it has sugar which feeds
excess cecals. I'm not a big fan of kale myself as it has a lot of calcium.
Are there any other veggies you've tried with him? I would give him a wee
bit of parsley and see how he does on that. How many pellets is he getting
now? You may need to reduce them.

As for ears, because my Cocoa is disabled, I have to clean his ears for him
all the time. They tend to get goopy more quickly when they age. I use my
baby finger...I know that sounds gross, but you get used to it. For deeper
jobs, I have an ear cleaner that I bought through the Colorado House Rabbit
society. It works quite well. I've even tried q-tips which can be fine as
long as you make sure you don't leave any cotton in their ear.

Here's the link for the ear cleaner. I'm sure you can order it to ship to
the UK...is that where you are? http://www.coloradohrs.com/gifts.asp?cat=1
Just scroll down a bit.

I see there also sell them on Ebay. This one ships from Hong Kong, but the
currency is listed in Australian dollars. It looks like a good one. The
light is helpful.

Great ear tool!  Funny,  my vet is not a fan of kale, but says carrot is
OK.   Jump loves kale, but gets some only every six weeks.

try taking away something vegs etc . one thing at a time. see if it
helps. try to cut more grass for him.
acidophilous would be best if you are afraid of what they gave you. i
would not use what i do not know. does it say the ingredients?
ears. ahh...
first off, a rinse once a day. fill ear canal with rinse.  massage ear
canal for one minute. get a baby nose syringe bulb. suck out as much as
you can. then dry ear as much as you can.
do not use qtip unless you know what you are doing and can see clearly.
scoop upwards don't dig or push in. . antibiotic drops are a good idea.
hope this helps.

Hi Lu! Good to see you again! I am bunless right now, but still hang out
here at apr. :-)

Remember Ronie? Her English Lop Rufus has HORRIBLE ear problems - and has
had for ages. If anyone would know about ear issues it would be Ronie - and
her experience with Rufus and her vet tech expertise would make her the
go-to person on this one!

Do you still chat with her? Have her email address? I don't think it's
changed from the old days...

Scritches to Smirn!

Hi!
Of course I remember you & Smirnoff.  Glad to hear from you.
There is a tool that is used to gently suck the wax from an ear, I had
it used on my human ear.  Call around and see if a vet has one. Tell
them about your wax problem.  Mites should be treated with Revolution.
One rabbit size dose on the back of the neck will rid you of all the
mites and there eggs for 30 days.  Panomec injections for mites is....
well, arcane.  You need at least three injections to get all the eggs

Overproducing cecals.  Hay with too much protein can cause this. Try
giving Smirny just the timothy hay and watch what happens.  Best wishes
& keep us posted.
