Hi everyone,
Well, Cocoa made it through the night. I was with him til early morning,
just feeding and massaging and holding. His tummy felt sort of bloaty and
uncomfortable, and not much was coming out, so I gave him a shot of reglan
in hopes that it would relieve some of this. This morning there was a small
pile of very misshapen poos and his tummy was flaccid and not gassy anymore.
I think Ronie you're right, he stopped producing cecals about four days ago
and the poops started to get more and more misshapen. Today, he doesn't seem
to have any urine output.
Of course I'm wondering, do I keep feeding him or will that cause him more
pain? He has had a few dandelion/grass leaves and a banana/carrot slice this
morning and his pain meds and I'm just about to give him some fluids. I just
don't want him to be in pain. If he eats and it won't come out, that will
mean gas, right?
This is the point where I need some advice so he can go as pain free as
possible. When I came out to the living room this morning, I thought he'd
gone. He looked kind of shrunken, but when I lifted him he opened his eyes.
He is on his day bed now and his ears are perky. I'm glad he's on a hefty
dose of metacam. He is just breathing more rapid and shallow. I don't think
he's in pain.
We'll see how much of today goes. I'm just going to hold him. Of course I
don't want him to be tortured. If it looks like this will go on for days,
then I will consider pts. I have to go to work tomorrow, my customer while
fairly understanding, I don't think will tolerate me not coming. I don't
want to have to leave Cocoa all day.
K...if you have any advice for this time, I welcome it.

a 1ml syringe full of aloe vera juice will soothe.
i also use peppermint tea and chamomile tea. they both help make gas go
away. i used this for jenny when she had enteritus for a month. it
helped alot.
can you take cocoa with you to work? i think this is a really good
exception. i hope you can.
Arlette & Cocoa - 26 May 2008 19:06 GMT
Hi Beth, thanks for the suggestions. I do have some camomile tea here.
I hope Cocoa doesn't languish for a month. Anything I can do for him is
simply a bandaid, as I can't reverse this aging process *sigh*.
I gave him another shot of reglan. He did eat a good plateful of watercress,
romaine and some parsley. He just doesn't seem to want anything that is too
tough to swallow or chew. He isn't wanting to many weeds today...funny kid.
But he did eat a fair bit. I think that is mainly the reglan working though.
Still no pee since last night. That can't be good.

Arlette
During this time, they tend to go HYPO-thermic - so take his temp if
you want and keep him warm. Warm water Bottles, micro-waved rice bags
My advise for feeding is continue with the greens as much as possible
- after all they are hydrated "hay" product. When i feed my green to
a very sick bun, i tend to cut the lettuce into stripes, and give lots
of parsley - they tend to like parsley when very ill. I also tend
to hold off on the carbs during this time - like carrot, apples ect,
unless that's the only thing they want. The input of anything will
keep things moving inside. even tho the gut is slow - it's still
moving. and because it's slow - that's why the gas/funky poops/
unbalanced good and bad GI bacteria. The carbs can make the bacteria
go more out of balance. but if there is no green intake, then i feed
anything just to try to keep the gut moving.
I've been there many many times Arlette. I know what you are going
thru. And i know it's hard for people to want to call and give their
support, but you prefer not. In my experience APR is all the support
I needed. Just to know people care, understand and give advise. Even
i need advise during these times because i'm a mom at that time, and
no longer a nurse. I know in my thoughts what i have to do medically,
but i'm thinking with my heart and feeling emotion at this time.
I'm concerned about his temp. this too can cause GI slow down. The
body is used to working at normal body temp. When the temp is not
normal - things slow down. think about people that fall thru ice and
get pulled out and hour later and survive! it's because things slow
down. on the other end, Think about people with heat stroke. Body is
too hot to fuction normally then too.
Oh and warm his fluids if you give some, i'm sure you knew that. :)
I'll be around for a few more hours - i'll check in with you - then
i'm runing away to MD to meet Rich for 3 days of R&R camping. Rufus
is doing very very well since i increased his Metacam. He is staying
home and my mom will come over. Ling and Milton will be going with.
If these are your final days with him, this is the most special time.
He has brought you so much joy over all these years. They know when
you are there to comfort them when they are not well. To know you are
there and letting them know it's ok no matter what happens. And if
his body just lingers, and he's doing really poorly and is in pain,
you can give him his final gift if he needs it.
Love you both! God will help you!

Thanks for your good advice Ronie. It helps me to know where I'm at and what
to do next. I wish I knew how long he had. I don't want him to languish too
long, but I will take him to the vet if he seems to be in pain.
He did eat a good amount of greens this morning. Today, he's favouring his
watercress and romaine.
I'm keeping him warm with his fleece blankie that Auntie Deb sent for him.
He feels his normal temperature. I can usually tell when he gets
hypothermic. His legs are warm and he's surrounded by memory foam and
padding which holds a lot of heat. I will take his temp nonetheless.
He isn't peeing at all now though. I hope he might have some later.
So...so far not so bad. Thanks Auntie Ronie.

Arlette, You've gotten wonderful advice from Beth, Ronie and many others and you're doing such a great job taking care of your
little chocolate boy. We're just praying along with you that, when the time comes, Cocoa will just slip peacefully away ... but are
so glad to hear that he has rallied. Love him and enjoy him for as long as he's allowed to stay here with you.

Arlette and Cocoa,
My heart is with you, every minute of the day.
If I can help in any way, you know I will.
Ronie's advice was beautiful, I thought.
If you can be with the boy at the end, I think it would mean a lot to
both of you.
If I could come to Thunder Bay and work your job for you, I would! Maybe
i can think of some other way to help.
Love,
Auntie Nona
