Hi guys,
I know rabbits are prone to GI stasis and we wanted to take some
preventative measures just in case for today until Precious goes to the vet
tomorrow for her surgery. I know a number of people have recommeded Ovol. I
picked up Ovol in drops (15 ml bottle with a dropper). The recommended dose
for infants is .25 to .5 per dose (max of 1.5 mls per day).
Could we get some advice on recommended dosage?

Don't do anything your vet has not asked you to do. Rabbits are suppose
to eat right up until surgery. If your vet does not know that, your vet
is not a rabbit vet.

Hi Joe,
Simethicome is generally used to relieve gas, so it wouldn't do anything as
a preventative measure.
Best of luck to Precious tomorrow.

I give my rabbits approx. 2 ml. 3 times a day when they show signs of gas,
like stretching out or sitting straight up uncomfortably, and not eating.
It is a very safe 'medicine' (not even that) that is 'inert', that means it
doesnot react with any other drug. It's handy to keep it in your medinebox,
but only use if Precious doesn't want to eat and is showing some discomfort.
When you'll get her home straight after surgery, it is important you keep
her warm. Make up a bed with a hotwaterbottle hidden in a blanket on one
side, but with enough room she can decide not to use it if she doesn't need
the heat.
Whenever my rabbits have a rough time (lilke an op.), I make sure I have
plenty of fresh herbs like celery, parsely and mint, as I find they will
often start with that before getting back to their food.
Good luck!

not need will just dissapear. it is harmless stuff. i give a dropper
full....
do you have any benebac? that would be good to keep her gut balanced..

We have Infacol here and it is for gas relieve of human babies.
We used it for emergency when rabbits has gas problem and just before seeing
vet, in order to help abit.
We would use the minimun dose for rabbit as it is for babies.
If you worry that Brandy does not eat after surgery, you could ask vet for
opinion about pain reliever and probiotics.
Get well soon.

well I wouldn't be surprised if Brandy doesn't eat after surgery either,
that is untill Precious starts to feel better again! ;)

Lots of paws here crossed for Precious tomorrow. That's wonderful that
you are taking such good care of her.
How is Debbie? Hope that surgery was as painless as possible.
Hoping all of you have a run of good medical luck starting right away...
