Our Rats have an odd odour, I think it is actually them rather the theer
cages, the brown one smells the strongest, he tends to be more jumpy also
then the black whiet one, still having fun with them though.
Also while I am here , my 6 year old wants to know what trick we can teach
the lads.

Is it a musky/sandalwoody smell? If so that is your rats' natural smell. I
actually like this smell, but I know it doesn't appeal to everyone.
As rats are intelligent creatures you can teach them quite a few simple
commands. The secret is to have patience and lots of rattie treats! If
you've ever trained a dog, use the same concept - show rattie what you want
him to do and when he does it reward with a treat. I would recommend
teaching rats their names first - keep using their names as much as
possible, repetition is the key.
Here are a couple of links to give you an idea of the kind of tricks you can
teach.
