Well, I have had my 2 boys now for almost 6 months, (they are now about 8 or
9 months old - they were rescue rats, so I'm not altogether sure of their
age) I love them to bits. Even though they are real friendly little boys,
can I get them to sit still for more than a second or so. I got them because
I thought they were supposed to be the slower rat, but these boys are
continuously on the go. Always off on some form of errand, and rushing back
to give me a lick in the ear, or a little 'puddle' present on some part of
my bare skin, or trying to get down my t-shirt.
Do they slow down? If so when?
John.

Rats, like us, will slow down a lot as they hit old age. Your two boys are
still quite young so will be lively and playful. It depends also on
individual personalities - I have had young rats who adored being cuddled
and stroked, so they tended to sit on your lap quietly and just doze off,
whereas the boys I have at the moment are on the go all the time (two are
just over 1 yr old and the other is about 5/6 months). In my experience
rats tend to start to slow down when they reach about 1 1/2 - 2 years old.
The liveliest rat I have had was a rescue rat, he was so fast and used to
dart around here, there and everywhere, never anytime for fuss from humans.
As he headed towards two years old (he lived to nearly three) he started
slowing down and he gradually got to the stage where he prefered to just
poddle over to me during his time out and sit on my lap for a bit of
attention.
