I finally got around to taking a picture of Pepsi's tumor. I hate to say it,
but her tumor actually looks bigger in real life.  another tumor started
growning on her chest by her right front leg.  doesn't look good.

The poor little mite, that's a big tumour.  I've never had a rattie with a
tumour, all mine have always been blighted with the other bane of rattie
lives - respiratory problems.

Give the sweet little girl a scritch from me.

That's a pretty awful picture Sue.  I have had one pink-eyed white that
developed a tumour almost that size but she was too old to start messing
about with ops and suchlike so I allowed it to carry on until the skin
looked as if it was getting too thin and took her to the vets.  I can
imagine that some Vets would frown on untreated tumours of such size, I'm
lucky that mine was understanding and I had taken their advice as well.

If it's any comfort, I have seen one male rat with a bigger tumour than
that - it was almost the same size as his body all down one side.  Again he
was a bit too old for an op, but apart from dragging it around he seemed as
happy as ever.  I also know of another female with a bigger tumour in almost
the same place who survived an op - but if Pepsi's already growing another
then you're right - it doesn't look good.  As long as she's still happy and
eating, and the skin hasn't broken down then love and attention is all you
can give until the day you have to decide to send her over the 'bridge'.

Scritches to you both,

Marian (and the mad half-dozen)

Thank you all for the well wishes.
I can't imagine it getting any bigger. Tumors don't "pop" do they? I hate
the thought.  BUT, she is eating and seems painfree and happy, so until she
isn't enjoying life anymore........
Thanks again,
Sue

I totally agree with you Sue... she's a lucky girl. Many would have given up
on her a long time ago.
Tumor and all, she's a gorgeous girl.

They don't 'pop' in way an abcess or spot can pop, but do watch for the skin
geting thin enough to degrade.  When it starts to look like that - don't
hesitate to do the kindest thing for her.  Through experience I know that
letting them go one day too arly is better than 1 hour too late, because you
can never go back and make it right and undo their suffering - all you can
do is remember for the next one.

Best of luck

Marian

Marian, Please excuse my ignorance, but what does "degrading" look like?

When it looks as though it will 'wear through' much like the toe of an old
shoe because it is so stretched and worn that it just won't give anymore  -
it gets thin and starts to break.  If it is left, it will just become an
open, weeping wound and will quickly become infected - you really don't want
that to happen.  The other problem is that the tumour is such a place that
it might interfere with the bladder eventually so keep an eye on any
problems in that area too.  This won't be much fun for you, Pepsi doesn't
know what will happen to her so she won't care - but humans understand the
future - rats only understand 'now' and live in that.  So as long as she's
kept happy and loved the only pain will be yours unfortunately.  It can be
tough having such sort-lived friends but their lives, brief as they are,
more than make up for it.

Thinking of you both

Marian and the happy half-dozen
