Hi All,

I came back from holiday yesterday to find an empty cage. We had two rats up
until 3 weeks ago but one died of a brain tumor (they were/are about 2.5
years old) so I assumed that her sister died while I was away and was quite
upset. My husband got back home from the vets where they had been - turns
out that she was dehydrated. She hadn't drank for a couple of days but
looked fine but when you touched her she was like skin and bone but looked
bulky. She was completely in a catatonic state. You could move her and
position her and she wasn't moving and she was just listless and stared
emptily. The vet gave her a couple of days to live. Her fur was stood on
end. Seems she got depressed at the loss of her sister and stopped eating
and drinking properly. She had been taking and eating treats from my husband
but leaving her ordinary food. We have been feeding her sugar water with a
syringe and it has really helped. She gradually came around a lot and the
vet injected her with adrenalin to perk her up. She was still very sulky and
upset so i decided to phone the pet store to see if they had any companions
for her (they hadn't before) to take her mind off things. Turns out they had
one female rat all alone. They warned us she was skittish and edgy because
she had escaped in the store and had to be chased! We collected her and
brought her home with a spare cage to introduce her slowly. When I put her
in the spare cage she shot out straight away and went powersniffing our
lonely rats cage. They both sniffed each other fine. So i opened up the cage
(with a spray bottle handy in case). To cut a long story short within one
day they are best buddies and seem to get on ok though the little one seems
to be dominating right now. They must both have been really lonely. Just
sent this so if anyone has a rat alone they know how bad it feels for them.
The new rat is NOT skittish at all like they said but they also said she had
been down since her cagemates got sold. When they are dehydrated they get
listless and their fur sticks up. She also seemed to lose the use of her
back legs but can now move around and is almost back to her old self and
improving all the time.

wish us luck,
Cat

I love happy endings... I'm so happy your sick little one came around with
the new rat.
It's so great when you have to lonely rat find happiness together.

Oh no!  Hailey is in day 7 of her 2-week quarrantine, getting over a massive
case of lice.  I noticed I haven't seen her drink out of her bottle once!  I
brought it over to her so she'd know what and where it was, but nothing.
The vet said she looked hydrated, and she has gained a little weight (5g).
She goes back again tomorrow morning for another dose of ivermectin so I'll
have her check again.

Hailey will eat human food (the veggies, fruits and pasta etc. so maybe she
gets water from those) but I don't see her eating much of her lab block or
drinking.  I KNOW she is depressed because she sleeps all the time.  She
never wants to go in even after running around for quite a while.  I KNOW
she misses her former sisters, but I can't break the quarrantine, right?  I
mean, I just don't want Maggie to get those lice.

I know it's hard but the quarantine is very important... not only to so the
new rat doesn't get lice but in case the new rat may have some illness that
she may spread to Haily. This way, you can watch both for any signs.
Have you tried putting in a bowl of water? Maybe she would prefer that?
Do you see the water going down in the water bottle? She must be drinking
when you aren't looking... just making her mommy worried...that's what they
do...lol

Hi Meghan and all,

I'd definitely syringe feed her some water just in case. Apparently if they
won't take it you can tilt back their head and they will drink it.
Our exisitng rat is Safira (very feisty-named after Jaheira from Baldurs
Gate with a twist) and my Son named the new rat Agent Navarre after the Deus
Ex character (she is a brown rex). The poor rattie who died was called Chain
(because of her markings).  Thanks for all the messages. I think that if
rats are alone unless you can be there 24/7 or a large part of the time and
be good at entertaining them then you should get more.
Good luck!

Poor little mite, she's having a tough time of it at the moment, but she'll
soon be living a normal, happy and contented life once her quarrantine is
over.

Have you tried giving her grapes - lots of goodness in a little package,
will help hydrate her too and rats can't seem to resist a grape or two.  I'm
sure, as Joanne says, she is drinking but you just haven't seen her.

Good luck with everything.

I'm kinda glad that we had already bought more rats before one of our
original two died. The original two (Spot and Stripe) were sisters.
Stripe got depressed after we lost Spot, but maybe the companionship of
Bing, Bong, Triangle and Bhindi (by then old friends) is what kept her
going.

We have a plan to buy no more rats (fat chance!) until we've lost all of
our current family, so we can switch to males. However, given the
loneliness factor, I'm not so sure of that plan anymore.

So glad you've pulled her back from the brink.

My old dumbo rescue males lived together in a group of four for nearly
three years. There is now one old man left. He used to be the crabbiest of
the four boys, the only one who ever bit anyone, but now that he's lonely
he is just the sweetest guy who brusks & grooms my fingers & loves to be
carried about. He was always the meanest to his brothers too, but he must
be sorry now that he misses them. I tried to put him with other rats but
he gets cranky with them but being too old to hold his own gets himself
bitten by starting fights he can't win. He now thinks his name is
"bunny-bunny-bunny!" which I say to him only when I'm about to take him
out, & he'll hurry to the door every time he hears it, whereas when
younger he was the one who'd stiffen himself or thyrash, striving not to
be picked up at all. So while it's sad for him that he outlived his
lifelong buddies, it's nice how terribly adoring he's become of Granny
Artemis & me. While he was on the davenport last night brusking nonstop,
Granny Artemis remarked, "Hard to believe this sweety used to bite."

"Of what are you afraid, my child?" inquired the kindly teacher.
"Oh, sir! The flowers, they are wild," replied the timid creature.

update-
They had a peaceful night together curled up in a ball. The young one is
being very cheeky and waving treats under Safira's nose and running off with
them after getting her interest. We are going to get another girl soon but
are letting them settle in together first. That way when the inevitable
happens with Safira being a little older Agent Navarre will have company
also. My Husband kind of pointed out the fatal flaw in our plans never to
leave a rat alone - means we will have rats for eternity. Oh well guess
we'll manage hahahaha. They are so lovely it is likely we would anyhow. Got
pooed on last night whilst handling Agent Navarre but guess she will get
used to it, she has a very good nature. They both had a minor rebellion last
night by going down the back of the bed where the headboard is and not
budging when it was time to go in. Safira is definitely back on form.

After having single rats (before I had room for more or realised they needed
friends), and then two or three at a time I have now ended up with a nice
large cage that holds 6 big girls comfortably, so the  'flirty-half-dozen'
have come to stay even though the individuals come and, sadly, go.  I have
found that 6 seems a nice number to work with.  I'm glad all yours are
settling in well.

When I started reading your post I thought it was going to be a sad story,
but what a lovely surprise - a happy ending!  So glad you have found a
companion for your lonely girl and that everything has gone so well.  I know
what it's like to have a depressed rattie after they have lost their cage
mate, I've been through it several times before.  Now I try and keep three
rats or more so when the inevitable sad day arrives that one of them passes
away, the others still have a friend or two there.

Lots of scritches to your two wee girls.
