I have a 10 month old rat that is loosing weight and I have no idea why. He
has no breathing difficulties, he's eating like a horse, he flies around his
cage like a youngster, and I don't see any mites. He has three other cage
mates with him, that all seem to be doing ok. I just don't understand it.

Anybody have any ideas as to what it could be? I am taking him to the vets
tomorrow to have a check up, but just wondered if anybody had seen this
before.

How much does he weigh and how fast is he losing the weight?
At ten months, he's probably entering his full physical and sexual maturity.
Is food available at all times? Is he being bullied in the cage?

Unfortunately, I don't have a scales, so I can't  tell you his weight, but I
can see and feel that he has lost some. The group is a really good one, its
2 adults and 2 youngsters, and I've never seen them fight. They rough and
tumble, but that's only now and again. There's plenty of food there too, and
they get fresh veggies and fruit on top every day. I've been quite lucky in
pairing the 2 pairs of them up. The other three are doing really well. No
signs of weight loss at all.

Its really baffling me.

I wonder if the young ones are keeping him very active and he's just
slimming down?
Make sure you keep an eye on him for any other symptoms.

Hi Joanne, I am giving him extra shoulder time, so I can make sure that
everything is ok. He loves just sitting on my shoulder. If I let him, he
would fall asleep on there. He's dozed once or twice when he's been watching
me on the pc.

He's off to the vets tomorrow, I hope he can find something out.

Thanks for the help,

John
