Allergic to male rats only?

Hi to all, and thanks for all the advice I've gotten from here.  I'm fairly
new to rats, I got a little girl last Christmas (from Petco) and loved her
to death - I guess literally.  When she died of myco back in April I
contacted a breeder and finally got three little boys in July.

However, from the time I've gotten these boys I have had terrible allergies,
which I never had with my girl.  And any time I hold any of them, my arms
break out in little blisters, and the skin gets really itchy.  It goes away
after about 15 minutes.  I *never* experienced this with my girl, and would
never have thought such a thing possible.  I'm not allergic to anything - I
am not even sensitive to poison ivy.  So now I have asthma, allergies, and
this skin thing.  I do plan on keeping them, I can't imagine giving them
away.  They get plenty of love from me despite the rash it gives me.  Long
sleeved shirts work wonders.

So has anyone heard of this happening?  Do males have something in their
urine or saliva that females don't?  I do have one boy - a great big Siamese
rat - who I believe I am more sensitive to than the others.  Is it possible
I'm only allergic to him, and he rubs off on the others?   But my guess is
there's something sinister in boy pee that's not in girl pee!!

Thanks for any insight you guys might have!

Carrie, you are not alone. Many people are allergic to boys and not the
girls. I think it's in the urine.
Have you tried a new drug called Singular? It works great for breathing
problems. Yes, I'm allergic to my rats. But there's no way I would be
without them. ;)

Thanks for the quick response - and it's good to know other people are crazy
enough to live with allergies for a rat!  I've had some friends get angry
with me for not getting rid of them.

My doctor has me on Flovent now, another inhaled steroid.  I started on
Advair but that did nothing for me.  I will mention the Singulair to her - I
go back in a couple of weeks, and I just saw the commercial last night.
Thanks again!

Another allergy sufferer here.  We find that bathing ours in
Allergroom shampoo does help a bit (which may be found at pet supply
stores, or online ... see link below).  And for a topical remedy for
the skin welts, a little hydrocortisone cream helps speed up the
disappearance and decrease the itchiness of those.

I'm surprised that you can be so violently allergic to one specific
allergen. Some people are very allergic to one thing (eg: Cats), but
you're showing these problems from just an additional chemical present
from Male rats.

I'm not disputing that this is the case at all, but am suggesting that
you have just started with an allergic response you were doomed to anyway
- allergies are funny things: People find that allergies sometimes come-
and-go over their lifetime, and no two people seem to be the same. So,
you might have been about to develop these problems about now anyway.

There's only one way to be sure - have the rats stay at a friends for a
week, and see if your symptoms clear (clean the room they were in
thoroughly before the start of your trial week). The other thing to try
is to find friends with female rats, male or female cats, dogs etc... and
see if you have a response to them, too. Knowing if you are only allergic
to male rats, or that you now show a response to all mammals, will be
vital information for you. Maybe later experiments could try and narrow
it down to fur or urine - for example, washing the rats every other day,
or cleaning out and washing the cage down every day may help - according
to whether it's the rats themselves or the urine which is the problem. IF
YOU EXPERIMENT WITH OTHER PEOPLES PETS, PLEASE BE VERY VERY CAREFUL.

Final word: Asthma is potentially a very serious condition: Indeed, in
some cases it can be fatal. Make absolutely sure that your asthma is
under control with the drugs provided to you: If it's not, then you
really do have to rethink your position on keeping your rats - sorry, but
I think your health has to come first. Even if it is totally under
control, you still have some issues: Steroid inhalers are great news for
Asthma sufferers where the allergens cannot be avoided - indeed, they
save lifes, and can prevent the later onset of Emphysema. However, if you
can stop the Asthma by the removal of a simple factor like male rats,
then you are still risking your health for their sake. To start with,
your Asthma may get worse, and fail to respond to your current dose-rate,
and in addition to this, you are going to be feeding your system with
steroids every day.

Good luck in the land of the wheezing (I've been living there for 34
years!).

Thanks, Dave.  I guess I should have mentioned I've got a male and a female
cat, and my boyfriend has a cat and dog.  I really can't say with any
certainty that the rats are the ONLY thing I'm now allergic to.  It may have
just started with them.  Asthma is one of the scariest things I've ever
dealt with.  Being without the inhaler when you're having an asthma attack
is terrifying.  If there's a chance this can worsen, or lead to permanent
emphysema I really do need to reconsider whether I can keep them.  I know I
won't get more males when these boys are, sadly, gone.  I can live with a
minor inconvenience, but the feeling of not being able to breathe is not
something I want to worsen.

I always needled my sister who has allergies and would joke with her, "oh
please - allergies are for the weak."  :-)   Guess the joke's on me now!

Thanks again for the info.

I developed an allergy to one of my boys a few months ago. I had no reaction
for the first year I had him, but then he got ill and my allergy started. i
had the same symptoms as you, my asthma would flare up and whenever he
touched me, I would come up in itchy welts(?spelling?) and was sneezing all
the time. Luckily my GP gave me a new inhaler and some antihistamines which
work wonders.
To start with I was only allergic to him and not his brothers, but a few
weeks ago, I developed an allergy to them as well. I'm fine with my girls
though. I've got used to the itching now and I cant imagine being without my
boys.

I take anti-histamines and a steroid spray for my allergies (I have many!)
which keep the sneezing, runny nose, wheeziness etc under control nicely,
but do nothing for the itchiness I get when scratched by little rat nails.
I think it's the urine under their nails that irritates the skin.  I'll itch
for about ten mins, so not long, hence it's something I just put up with.
If it's really bad I put some 'Witch Doctor' on which soothes the soreness
and itching.

Just thought I'd add to this thread that I was diagnosed with animal
allergies three years ago.  Went to the allergist and had the skin test etc.
which came back with an allergy to cats and dogs.  Since they didn't do the
"rat test" I wasn't diagnosed with it but I'm sure I would have been.  I get
the same skin reaction when their nails get on my skin etc.

Of course, having 5 cats, 3 rats and 2 mice my allergist thinks I'm insane
and spent a great deal of time trying to convince me to get rid of SOME of
my pets (um, how am I supposed to choose which ones???) but luckily for me
my allergies aren't severe enough to cause a threat to my health.  Just
annoying symptoms.  I mainly wear turtlenecks when handling the ratties and
try not to let the cats get too fiesty with their claws.  So, you're not
alone!  :-)

That's wild!  I was wondering if allergists would test you for rat
allergies.  I'd love to go get the skin test done just out of curiosity.
Maybe I could bring rat pee and they could use that.  :-)     Sorry to hear
you have the allergies too!
