Tania - 05 Nov 2004 00:29 GMT Hi Everyone,
Just thought I would drop in before I head off to sleep ...............
I sent Neptune to the Bridge tonight :o( Some of you may remember my posts back in September when I thought I might be losing him. He perked up for a good while but became so manky bless him, and he was balding and skinny. This last few days he has been making intermittent gasping sounds, usually only for 2-3 mins before he calmed down in our arms but tonight he was gasping for over 20 mins and I honestly thought he was going to die in my arms as he was convulsing too. I just couldn't make him wait any longer ...............
The vet saw him and said it was definitely the right thing to do, considering all the meds that he has been on and no improvement. I have him here with me now before he goes to Willow Haven to Saturday. I just can't put their bodies away when they go, I have to cuddle him and kiss him. I let the other lads sniff him and they were all licking him, it breaks my heart. He is at peace now, I know that deep down.

Sobremonte Acres - 05 Nov 2004 01:18 GMT I am so very sorry, Tania. God bless Neptune. He's no longer suffering and his spirit is alive. If you want to talk about it, I'm all ears and you may email directly to me if you'd like. I've been through with other pets we've had with hamsters, cats and a dog. For the hamsters, if I no longer want to see them suffering like that gasping for breath, I put them down myself. One is very old and is not suffering yet. But pretty soon she will. Poor girl.
You've gave Neptune a great home and love he ever had. God bless you for that. I am glad that we bought some rats. Because in about 20 rats a day will be gone just like that. Many people buy them for snake food.

Tania - 05 Nov 2004 22:37 GMT Thanks so much for all your kind words every-one, this group is so great! Couldn't imagine not popping in to see you guys everyday! :o) I've taken Neps to Willow Haven tonight, he'll be back with me next week, we have a candle burning for him tonight.
Have a good weekend all xx

You helped him on his way when he needed it and is no longer suffering. I know how hard it is making that decision, you did a brave thing.
Take care. My thoughts are with you.

Just watching my two have a scrap and hoping that I'll never have to do the same thing that you have been brave enough to do. Be assured that you did the right thing, you cared, you shared and then you proved that you cared for Neptune. Nobody will blame you, he led a happy life and so did you.

> Hi Everyone, > [quoted text clipped - 17 lines] > > Night All xxx DnA - 07 Nov 2004 18:52 GMT I truly feel your pain. My Faith passed on last two weeks ago, and my Rizzo joined her a few hours ago. They were both very happy, and while Faith was a baby at 6 months and went to sleep healthy, never to wake up, Rizzo was three and had the same problems you listed. They are both beyond pain now, and on Halloween I welcomed Ratticia into my home. She joins Buffy (Faith's sister) and Schrodinger as three of the most spoiled rotten rats I've ever had the joy to know.

It must have been particularly hard to lose Faith, being so young and not showing any signs of illness. Have you any ideas what may have caused her death?
I'm sure both Faith and Rizzo have left you with many happy memories which you can take comfort from.
Scritches to your newbie Ratticia, Buffy and Schrodinger :o)

DnA - 09 Nov 2004 01:26 GMT Thanks Tracey. I haven't got a clue what carried Faith off, she never sniffled or even slowed down. I'd planned on taking her to work with me on the day before Halloween (being a boss has its perks) but two days before that she didn't come for her treat. She was my little cuddle buddy, and escape artist, thank goodness she always came when we called. Except for the time she was busily nibbling on my favorite (new) jacket...
I wear that jacket with pride, nibbled bits and all.

I had to laugh about your jacket as exactly the same thing happened to me - I'd bought a new jacket and loved it. I'd thrown it onto the bed after coming in one day, and let out my rats. One of them was such a people loving rat he used to follow me around like a shadow (he was the most gorgeous, loving rat you could wish to meet) and followed me into the bedroom whilst I was sorting something or other. Up he jumped onto the bed to snuggle down on my pillow (one of his favourite places when he couldn't get to your shoulder or lap). The phone rang and distracted me for ten minutes or so, when I came to hang the jacket up it was practically in tatters - my wee guy must have decided to investigate what was on the bed and had really gone to town on my cherished jacket! He just sat there looking at me as if butter wouldn't melt! Same happened with a brand new pair of jeans a few months later... Why do I never learn? lol. Never was able to replace that jacket <sob>...

Most of my friends think I'm nuts for having rats as pets at all, not to mention grieving at their passing. Little Ratticia is great, I'm trying to figure out what color-type she is and am baffled. She's got a white belly and band over her shoulders, with a white star on her forehead, and the rest of her is light brownish grey with other various white splotches here and there. No very solid boundaries except for her forehead star. The people at the store I got her from (I consider any rat from a petstore a rescue, just like a pound pet) had never even heard of anyone keeping them as pets. So I educated them, like it or not. I wrapped it up when their eyes started glazing over, but they now know that rats are so much more than snake food. The most skeptical look came at the mention of rat intelligence, I asked *very* sweetly if they remembered college psychology classes? with the innocent look of "but everyone took college psychology."
Yes, I can be evil.. LOL

Rats truly are the most misunderstood animals on the planet. I always say that to the people at work and tell them it's their loss!! One of my mates from work was skeptical but she came to my house one night and fell for them!!!
