My husband took Tyche to the vet this morning to deal with the lump
she'd suddenly sprouted on her throat.  Apparently she managed to pop
it herself while trying to get away from the horrible ol'
needle-wielding vet.  Now she needs:

* twice-daily oral antibiotics
* two to three times daily cleansing with Betadine solution
* every other day replacement intestinal flora in a tube (I had no
idea this even existed)

for 10 days.

She does not like being held at all, so if anyone has any bright ideas
about how to get her to hold still and let us clean up her throat and
pump Baytril into her, I'd be most appreciative.

She has had oral medication before, and didn't give us too much
trouble about it. I think we mixed it with fruit juice. Is there
anything Baytril shouldn't be mixed with, if she refuses to take it
straight?

Our rats liked baytril so you might noit have as much trouble as you think

I had one of my boys develop an abcess in the same area.  We had to do the
baytril as well for that one -this particular rat is very aware when I slip
baytril into things like yogurt-which he loves.  I tried oatmeal, which he
loves, "absolutely not" he tells me.  However, I found the perfect solution
for my boy -creamed corn.  All my boys love cooked corn on the cob, so the
idea came to me try the creamed corn.  I don't know what your dosage is,
mine was .1 cc 2x a day.  So I put a teaspoon amount on a plate and mixed
the baytril in, he went for it whole hog and was none the wise, AND mom
earned points for giving him a "treat"....Hope this trick might help ya!

She's on .4 cc's twice a day, which seems like a *lot* when we're
trying to stick it down her throat.

I tried applesauce this morning -- she didn't completely refuse to eat
it, but she wasn't at all enthusiastic. I left it in her cage and took
all the other food out, so I hope eventually she'll get hungry and
finish it off.

I think I'll try soaking it into a bit of bread for tonight's dose --
they're all very fond of bread, and the Baytril's pretty liquid. I
hope the "Ooh, bread!" response will kick in and she'll finish it off
before she realizes it tastes funny....

I always use some kind of sweet biscuit - digestive or suchlike - the
baytril soaks in well (or you can help it by jabbing the biscuit with a fine
point) and it also means that I give a piece to all the girls, just
targetting the dosed piece to the rightful recipient.

Update: we had a better idea, and have discovered the Ultimate Baytril
Disguise -- eggnog.

Also, Tyche seems to like the "benebac" replacement intestinal flora
stuff, which is nice. She only wanted to eat about half of it, so we
smeared the rest on a bit of bread and left it in her cage -- she's
been nibbling it on and off for a while, but she's not very hungry.  I
am not worried about that stuff, since it doesn't seem like it needs a
very accurate dosage or anything.

*Sigh* If only we could get egg nog in the UK - I remember it fondly when I
was in the USA as a child.  Of course I was only allowed a taste - but that
was enough to know I liked it!

You could probably make it -- I'm sure I have a recipe around here
somewhere. I don't like it myself, but my husband found a half-gallon
at the grocery and has been quietly depleting the supply.

REAL Egg Nog is, interesting. The stuff you buy at the
grocers is NOT very good...what the heck is "Guar" bum and
WHY am I drinking it instead of chewing?

As far as I am aware baytril is ok to mix with any foodstuff.  I've had
successes when I mix the medicine with mashed potato (especially if you add
a bit of milk and marg/butter!), soya chocolate dessert, porridge, crushed
cornflakes with scant of milk and bread with jam on (found that some rats
know baytril is soaked into bread if you just give them plain bread).

Hope she'd better soon!
