Boy do I ever have a major headache on my hands.... The youngest boys have
discovered that Ira is neutered and now they won't leave the poor old bloke
alone. What makes it worse is that Ira won't defend himself. He couldn't
go anywhere in the house last night for what Edward would be mounting him
and in turn Earl would be hanging off him and on and on and on. I
considered putting Ira in a separate cage at night. I did that but he
looked sooo miserable that I had to put him back. He was no sooner in there
than the stroppy sex starved teenagers were at him again..:(( The only
answer we found was to block off the lower level and make it into complete
home for Ira. I added a few of the older, quieter boys so he would have
company. Peace reigned at last although the teenagers were frantically
trying to shift the concrete slab we had put over the hole. This morning we
opened up the level again and we had no problems. I am wondereing if this
is a nighttime behaviour that will be permanent or wether it is just a case
of amorous teenage males? What is the consesus on this? It isn't a problem
to block off the lower level just at night but I have to confess to being
appalled at their behaviour...:(( Hope all is well with the Ratties in your
life..:)

LOL... I think your horny little buggers will soon learn that there's no
relief with Ira. Poor Ira, I'm surprised he's not fighting back... mmm,
maybe he's enjoying the attention.
Locking them up at night may be a good idea.

Hi Kate. I'm in a similar predicament at the moment. I've had to recently
seperate my eldest boys (Max and Alvie) from the youngster (Fudge) as he's
hounding them both by continually mounting them. Alvie takes it all in his
stride as he's so laid back but Max gets really irritated by it and then
they get into scraps. What started out as small squabbles has now escalated
into big fights with fur flying and each rat getting a few wounds, hence my
decision to block the top level and a half of the cage off for Fudge and the
other two levels for Max and Alv. I hate to see rats on their own though,
but the whippersnapper was just causing too much stress for the others. I
do still let them out of their cage together, as I'm there to break up any
fights they may start straight away.
Fudge is a sweet, gentle rat with humans, just a little bugger with his
fellow rats. I have been mulling over whether it would be worth getting him
castrated or not. I really don't know. I guess this is what I get for
chirping on just last month about how well my rats get along together :o(
