Pesky rats in the loft. Done the smoke tests, drain CCTV etc but
nothing ever found.

Can I seal the cavity wall in the loft to prevent them getting in, or
is not that simple ?

Thanks.

Yes you can seal the cavity and it should have been done by the builder if
it is a relatively new house.
You can use asbestalux, which is like asbestos and comes in flat sheets
which you will have to place all along the cavity making sure there are no
holes, place bricks or something else on top to weight it down.

Another alternative is to fill the cavity with blown fibreglass insulation
but you must do the full house or it will become damp, this will prevent
them from moving around in the cavity....there are government grants
available for this if you are disabled or get attendance allowance, to pay
for it will cost around £600 - £800 for a detatched house.

Another good idea is to seal all holes in the exterior brickwork, if you
walk around outside your house you will notice holes all over the place
where they are getting in, simply blocking these will very often stop their
access to your loft completely....all holes over an inch across should be
filled with a strong mix of sand and cement and checked regularly for a few
days afterwards for signs of gnawing.
