On inspection of Pierre tonight I noticed on his left hind leg, the nail on
the 3rd toe is all red (like it looks like blood inside the nail), and the
toe is slightly more pink than the others. The nail is also about half as
short as the others (which are unfortunately quite long) and I am afraid he
got caught on something and ripped it off.
Is this common? Is there anything I can put on the nail to prevent an
infection? I'm pretty sure he'll just lick off whatever I put on. He
doesn't seem affected in any way and had a big romping play session tonight.

Hi Meghan,
Hurt toe and loss of toe nail is very common in rats. I don't put anything
when my guys lose a toe nail or hurt their toe. If the toe becomes very
swollen, then I'll soak the toe in warm salt water. Eventually, it clears up
and they are back to normal. :)

Phew!!! I had visions of more amputations. I'll keep an eye on it for now.
Crazy boys.
Thanks Joanne.

I've noticed this quite a lot with my guys - I think during time out they
catch their nails (I've seen rats catch them on carpets before, panic a bit
and yank them away) and the nails get damaged. I just usually leave it
alone unless it looks sore, then I bathe it with salt water.

Poor boys! I have tried to trim their claws a few times but it makes me SO
nervous. Their little nails are so small and they sqirm so much I'm just
afraid to do more damage than they would to themselves.

I noticed Dean had a "hang nail" but I didn't touch it as it wasn't
affecting him at all. He still ran around like a bullet...:) You could
try putting a brick or a rough piece of concrete in their house for them to
walk on?
Regards Kate

The first time one of my boys lost a toe nail, there was so much blood in
the cage I thought someone died! At the time, I had a boy with an abcess.
My first thought was the abcess popped! After carefully inspecting the rat
with the abcess (to my suprise, the abcess was gone, but no blood!) and then
EVERY rat after that until I found the bloody toe!
