I got a new rat who is a year old, and he looks very happy, eats well, but
he makes this sound like a tennis ball being hit, but very softer of
course.........

Anyone have any ideas what the noise means?

He wants to play tennis?

At what point does he make this noise?
When he's eating? - running? - sleeping?

I'm afraid you'll have to supply a bit more information than 'he sounds like
a tennis ball'.

That's very odd... I never heard of a rat doing such a sound. Does he seem
well in every other way?

Does he make this sound constantly or do you only notice it now and again?
I've noticed many rats when they are chilling out and relaxing contentedly
do a kind of hiccup chirrupy thing every few seconds - is this what you
mean?
