Hi All,

Thanks for the response to my post - Very kind of you all :-)

Took Uly to the vets tonight, maybe it's just me but I think my vet finds
rats quite hard to diagnose! He is a great vet though, and has rats of his
own so he is always good with the boys.

Anyway, he says that Uly hasn't got a bad chest and his breathing sounds OK.
He saw that Uly was a little wobbly on his feet, but said he may just be
under the weather, because he does seem a little poorly. He said it COULD be
neurological but before he went down that avenue he wanted to dismiss other
things. So, for the next 3 days Uly is on Metacam (which he says is like us
taking an iboprofen) If he hasn't perked up by Thursday we have to take him
back, and he will explore other avenues.

He is still eating and drinking, mainly kitten food although he did munch 2
yoggie drops at the vets! He sits in his house all day & night, but I do get
him out for cuddles on my lap in the evening, and he likes a wander around
but I feel bad letting him slug around!! That sounds worse than it is, he
isn't dragging the hind legs, it's the front paws that seem more wayward!

After reading your further posts tonight, I am hoping that perhaps Uly had a
stroke. Wouldn't Marc have guessed that though? Maybe if the Metacam doesn't
work he'll suspect a stroke perhaps, or the brain :-( Fingers crossed
though - My little lad deserves all the care I can provide and I won't give
up on him yet! He deserves me to explore all avenues!!

How long would it take to recover from a stroke?

Keep you posted peeps! x

It's really good news that his lungs are ok. The metacam is a painkiller and
an anti-inflammatory drug. Watch for possible side effects like stretching
his body and sucking in his sides.
Why is Uly eating cat food? Is that his usual food? Cat food is very high in
protein and basically meat based and not enough veggies/grains/nuts/fruits
for rats. I would definitely replace the kitty food with Ensure or Boost
with pablum and cut out the yoggies. Yoggies are just sugar, really bad for
rats. As a treat, try a fresh piece of banana?
I hope he recovers quickly!!

Oh dear :-(  Am I doing bad things to Uly?!

I thought kitten and baby food was good for ailing ratties? I am sure I'd
read that loads before?! He won' eat hard food, so nuts and grains is out.
I'll stop the yoggie drops, and will mash some veggies tonight too. He likes
the peeled grapes I brought him and I'll get him some Ensure or Boost 2morro

Baby food is ok too, but Ensure has so much nutrients packed in, it would be
of great benefit to him.
I didn't mean to feed Uly grains/nuts, what I meant is that cat food doesn't
contain those kinds of nutrients for a rat.
Don't worry too much, you were keeping his weight on, which is certainly
important when they are sick.

Thanks Joanne!

I just worried that I was doing more harm than good there for a while :o(

Will definately get that Ensure/Boos 2morro - Hopefully he'll lap it up!
Thanks for the quick advice x

Well, I hope I have managed to get something similar to Ensure or Boost -
According to the pharmacy, Complan & Build Up are the same thing! Mixed up
some for Uly tonight and he licked loads!! He is licking sugar water off of
my finger too.

I have been reading about pituary tumours on the web following replies to my
original post, and he is sure showing those symptons :o( *sigh* Fingers
crossed for my little man x

Well Tania, it sounds like sort-of good news anyway.  Good to hear his
breathing is good.  Jacques was on Metacam in December as one of his pain
meds after his amputation.  He HATED it passionately and completely refused
it after a few days.  I hope Uly takes better to it.  The stuff does smell
awful.

If it was a stroke, that is really hard, but although I've never had a
rattie have a stroke, I do have a mouse that survived a stroke last fall,
and she is still going strong!  She had horrible neurological symptoms and
couldn't even walk or drink or get to the food bowl.  I was keeping her
alive by hand for a few days, then the "rodent miraculous recovery system"
kicked in and she got better amazingly fast.  She still has side effects and
walks with her head all bobbly and sometimes falls over, but she runs on the
wheel, eats like a pig and generally enjoys all the things she should.

Many rats make a full recovery after a stroke in a few days to a week, as
did my male mentioned in my previous post.  It's good news at least that
Uly's breathing is ok - one less thing to be worried about.  I hope your lad
makes a good recovery if he has had a stroke and if it is something else
that it can be sorted with meds.  Good luck with everything.
