Swollen toe

My invalid rat, Tallulah, has developed a swollen toe on her right
forefoot. It doesn't seem to be painful -- she takes no notice when I
touch it -- but the digit is noticeably larger and pinker than its
neighbours. I assume she has simply caught the nail on something and
wrenched it? What it actually *looks* like is chilblains... if you've
ever seen those ;-) Swollen, pink and slightly shiny.

Aw, poor sweetie, my crew have had their fair share of swollen toes. It
should heal on it's own.

Pierre just had this same thing happen to him.  It got quite nasty looking
before starting to get better.  It happened on his hind left foot, the
second to last toe ended up very red (almost looked like it had been
bleeding) and the nail was mangled.  Eventually the whole nail just fell
off.  I did soak it a couple of times in warm salt water, which he didn't
like very much.  It took a week or two to start looking normal again and now
the nail is growing back.  It never looked infected though, and never slowed
him down at all (he never limped on it).
