Apples Protect Rats from Colon Cancer

A Strasbourg Germany study at the Institute for Cancerous Diseases of the
Intestinal Tract in Strasbourg has concluded that the consumption of
apples protects rats (& therefore probably humans) from colon cancer,
because antioxidants found in apples functions as a prophylatic for colon
cancer.

Lab rats were exposed to substances that trigger colon cancer then one
group continued on a regular diet while the other group was given apple
extract in their drinking water. The rats that received the apple extract
had far fewer incidents of the disease.

The amount given was the equivalent of a human eating two apples a day, so
the aphorism should be changed to "Two apples a day keep the doctor away."
However, given other dietary considerations, two apples might not be
enough for people, & for apples probably wouldn't be enough to counteract
the increased incidents of colon cancer among smokers, so the aphorism can
be further ammended to, "Two apples a day & no cigarettes keeps the doctor
away."

Interesting... and I was just reading yesterday that drinking a few cups of
coffee a day can help prevent liver cancer:

Oh that's good news, I've been feeding my rats apples everyday since I got
them. I have half, they get the rest.

At least I've been doing something right.

I am SO safe then...and my bunch must be safe also
because if I don't keep a close eye out they steal
a wee dram or two!

8^) Amazing isn't it...we do the right things
without being told. Something to be said about
listening to ones instincts.

hehe, your right there. What amazes me though is I never peel them, but when
they have finished eating them, there's 8 bits of peel lying round the cage,
with the white completely removed from them.

Anybody else's rats do that?

Mine do that too! Does that mean we shouldn't be eating the peel?

Great, I have wierdo Rats...LOL none of them are fussed on apples..:(

I love the peel, its where all the taste is. Funnily enough though, its not
just the rats that left it, when I gave apple to my hamsters they were
exactly the same, I'd find bits of peel left over in their cages too.

My rats seem to leave the skin/shell on most things - apples, beans, peas,
potatoes...  When I kept gerbils they were the same.  I once gave my rats a
smartie (like M+Ms, crispy shell with chocolate inside) each and blow me if
they didn't lick all the chocolate out and leave the shell!
