"24-hour bug" for ratties?

I'm not sure what to make of this...

One of our rats, Stardust (15 month old male), was very ill yesterday
-- he slept for most of the day, when I gave him a food block, he
initially showed no interest, then very weakly chewed at it, taking
over 30 minutes to eat it.  He was very wobbly on his feet and was
relatively hesitant to move at all, just wanted to stay where he was.
He did not have any sounds of respiratory distress that I could detect.
Last night, when I went to bed I honestly did not know whether he
would still be with us in the morning.

The good news is, today he was active, his appetite was back, and was
acting relatively normally.

We were happy about this, but I am certainly puzzled as to what was
going on. Do rats get "24-hour bugs". I guess, from most of the
discussions in here, I have developed the expectation that any health
symptoms represent something catastrophic.  Is it common for rats to be
sick for a short time then get over it themselves?

Hi Hans, I have noticed that from the symptoms you described, could have
indicated stomach upset. I've noticed this with one of my boys after giving
them a piece of banana. I didn't put two and two together until a couple
days later when Jersy acted real weird after another piece of banana.
So it could be something like an internal pain or it could be the beginning
of something else. It's really hard to tell with these guys because they
mask their pain so well.
It's good that he quickly recovered.

I havent heard about 24hr bugs with rats either :-((. With tummy bugs, how
can you tell if they have one? I feed my rats fruit everyday, they get a
piece of apple, and a piece of banana, and sometimes will get a piece of
mango too. Together with everything else I feed them. Can bananas and
mango's cause them tummy upset? One thing with mine, they always seem to be
hungry, no matter how much feed them.

With Jersy, I noticed that he became very quiet, didn't move and was puffy.
When I touched him he would do a small squeak. I knew something was wrong
then. I took him out put him alone in a small cage to monitor his food and
his poop and pee. It can be anything from obstruction to bladder infection.
After two days of only rat blocks, everything was fine. So I put him back in
the big cage. After their banana treat, Jersy became the same as before. So
I knew it had to be the banana. No more bananas and he's completely fine
again. I don't know about mangos but I do know that bananas that are not
ripe enough can cause stomach upset to rats.

Thanks Joanne,

I'll have to be more careful with bananas I think. I don't like unripe ones,
I usually eat them when they are  covered in brown spots, really ripe. If
they aren't when I get them, I leave them next to an avocado, and that
ripens them really quickly. That's something else they get often too.

As Joanne says, it's just the green bananas to be wary of.  But maybe like
us, some rats have food intolerences to certain foods???  I mainly feed my
rats dried fruit - they particularly like banana and I recently bought them
a bag of banana chips covered in yoghurt which they have as a treat every
few days.  They love dried mango and it has never had any adverse effects on
them so I think you're fine with the mango.

You mention in your other post about feeding them avocado often, this fruit
is good for them but is loaded with calories so you may want to cut back a
little on that.  Avocado is one of the foods that is good to give to rats
that have lost a lot of weight to help build them up again.  I have read
that the stone of the avocado is posionous, and last year panicked like mad
when one of my rats managed to sneak into the kitchen bin, rescue an avocado
stone and proceed to eat a large chunk of it - it didn't seem to bother him,
thank goodness, but it's not to be recommended!
