Rat vocalizations

I have read now about ultrasound and audible vocalizations of rats. I
observed myself all kinds of chirping and squeaking sounds from rats.
Now I observed something strange. The females sometimes make humming
sounds, actually all in the same frequency, the small ones and the big
ones. It sounds like the humming or honking of hares.  It is however a
very weak sound, only noticable if I directly put the nose at my ear.
First I thought it is some respiratory problem, but then they would not
make all the exactly same sound at exactly the same pitch. Has somebody
observed this in his rats?

Never got that far, because the rats nose is always sniffing at my ear,
to see if there's anything tasty hidden in there.

Yep, females and males in heat or trying to be dominate do emit that strange
kind of noise. I have noticed this with my rats, only the more dominate ones
or the ones trying to be dominate over another, if there are females around,
the males will do it all the time. When I hear that noise, I know to be
extra gentle when handling the stressed rat.

My female Maggie makes a strange noise that my other rats don't make.  It's
kind of a muted, short eee and I notice that she does it when she's really
happy or having fun running around.  I don't know what it is, but it can't
be related to being in heat because she's spayed.  It's really cute though.

My boys make funny chirpy noises too, when they are excited. One, who's my
lap rat, when he's sitting on my shoulder, will whistle in my ear.

John.
