HI,
My girls have 3 rats together in a cage, and they have noticed recently
that
the ratties are losing the ends of their tails, bit by bit. Also, my
daughter
noticed today that one has recently lost a finger! ( like real recently)
They all seem to get along well, for the most part, so it doesn't
seem that it's a result of fighting. The cage is in our family room
which is near our bedroom, so if they raised a ruckus we'd hear
them at night. They are males.
We are very perplexed, to say the least.
Does anyone have an ideas as to what is going on?
Thanks,
Katie

I've never heard of this before, and cannot think what would be causing it
if you say there has been no fighting. Are there signs of any blood?
Maybe others here may be able to shed more light, but I would advise you to
see a vet as soon as possible.

I don't know if its applicable, but there is a bacterial infection in
hamsters that causes them to loose their toes and parts of what tails they
have. Is there any possibility that something similar could happen to rats?
Just a thought.
John.

Is there any blood in the cage? I recommend bringing the rats to a rat savvy
vet.

Ok, this sounds like you could have a problem there where the
circulation may be impaired. Have you noticed whether the rat's skin is
particularly dry, or if the tail ir feet are blue or have a tinge of
blue to them?
Did the tail just appear gone one day, or did you notice thatthere was
anything wrong with the tail before it went?
How much is gone, do you have any photos you could share with us?

Are the rats brothers? Did they come from the same litter? The same breeder?
My first thought was poor circulation, but it's unusual for multiple rats to
suffer from poor circulation unless they are genetically predisposed or
subjected to poor conditions.. does anyone smoke inside the house?
Secondary smoke will affect rats even more readily than children....
Anyone here who's seen rats in full play mode will vouch for how quick they
can be at times, Has
fighting and/or rough play definately been ruled out?
Mitzy, who we lost four weeks ago broke her leg when two of the other girls
were playing and fell on her, she was two months off four years but still
playing like she was one. She never let out an eep.
We lost her because the vet left her on gas for too long.
Don't be perplexed, 4 years and I'm still learning just how amazing (and i
admit it, stubborn) our little fuzzbutts can be, although vetinary attention
should defiantely be your very next step.
Read up on dominance and power grooming among rats, that will give you a
good idea of what is acceptable (play)fighting in rats, and when to draw the
line a call a time-out.

Hi! Wow, almost four years!! You'll have to tell us your secret. That's so
sad that she died due to the vet's negligence.
