heres my new cage.

I put some cardboard under it for some more support, and a bit of a backwall
to stop any accidents.

I stung up my old water bottle and will get the new one that broke replaced.

Very nice!!
A few suggestions, don't use clay litter, if the rats ingest this, it could
be very harmful to them. Also, get a bigger litter pan, they need one that
they can get their whole body in it. Any chance you can remove that bottom
wire floor? Just take it off completely.
I really like the idea of the autofeeder.
Good job!

right no clay litter, ill throw some more saw dust in it.

Bigger litter trey, im not sure I can get one thats bigger that will fit in
their.

I took that water bottle back and the pet shop bloke gave me this  yml drink
tube, which is a good quality stainless steel one, that takes normal drink
bottles.

Seems good quality and fixes to the cage well, also can be screwed to a wall
for outdoor use..

I don't think I want to cut the wire floor off, but it just clips in , but I
will buy some type of tile to place on the floor. I heard if you buy
something like a rock slate tile, this can blunten their claws?

Now to build a rope, and a cloth level section..

Im going on holidays, to Newcastle, so ill have a look at some pet shops and
see what other accessories I can get for it, since I live in a small
isolated town.

Cheers and beers

I would suggest some sort of covering for the wire floors.  I use the
individual vinyl floor squares that can be bought at a home improvent store.
Easy to clean with damp cloth, and the ratties don't have to walk on wire.
I'm so afraid of bumble foot that the extra clean up time is well worth it.

Very nice, and good advice from the folks here. On our cages like this, we
took pliers and removed the bottom wire. Now they have freedom in the bottom
with CageFresh.

Good luck with everything.

I'd definitely get some vinyl tile and lay it down on the floors.  We've
used that in our girls' cage and it works wonders.  I'd also get a larger
litter box.  I use aspen bedding as a floor bedding and then use the aspen
in the litter box (the second floor is vinyl tile), and they've used it no
problem.  Now, granted, they still use the main floor as a toilet area too,
but they do use the litter box predominately.  I never really had to do
anything to get them to use it either.  They just sort of took to it
themselves.

Well i brought some carpet and put it in their cage as i couldnt find any
tiles (glossy smooth) or pavers (that didnt weight a ton) that were
suitable.

also a peice of rope for them to climb on.

An idea one of the posters here came up with (Sue, I think) is to line the
levels of the cage with plastic tapestry canvas - it's easy to clean and the
little holes in the canvas allow pee to go through and not just sit there in
a pool.  I thought it was a brilliant idea!  Regards keeping the ratties'
nails down you could just place a brick or piece of largish stone under
their water bottle so that everytime they go to have a drink they have to
climb onto it.

yeah I was looking for a nice ruff thin paver or tile today but they were
all either brick size a few inches thick, or smooth glossy surface. But yeah
under the water bottle would be a perfect place to put it.

one thing ill need to get is a largish rat hide for them to sleep in, they
have this log one that clips to the side of the cage, but its a tight fit
for the 2 rats, although I think they enjoy being squished in it. Any ideas
on what I should get them? im going to Newcastle (Australia for those os
ppl) next week and will look in some of their petshops, which are a lot
bigger that ours, although probably lack supplies for cows, horses and other
farm machinery..

cheers

Actually, mine really like cardboard boxes and tubes. Their favorite
boxes are these smallish pasta boxes we get, which have a hole in the
front as well as the top (when they have pasta in them, the front hole
is covered with plastic so you can see what kind of pasta it is, but
we take that off before we gie them to the rats). They're also very
fond of the tubes that things like oatmeal and grits come in.

Right now their favorite place to spend time is a paper grocery bag I
filled with shredded paper.

The great thing about cardboard is that you never have to wash it --
just throw it out when it gets stinky and pop a new one in. I do have
a large plastic hiding-place, but it gets very stinky very fast when
they sleep in it (because they just will not learn not to pee in
there!), so I have it outside the cage, as a thing they can play with
when they're running around.

Also, most rats absolutely adore hammocks. If you don't have any of
those, a really easy way to make one is to cut part of the leg off of
an old pair of jeans (or other pants), then string two ropes through
it and tie them to the sides or top of the cage. You could also put
safety pins in the corners and attach them to the top of the cage.
Personally, I wouldn't use safety pins anywhere where the rats could
reach the head ends, so I've only got safety-pin versions at the very
top of the cage.

Well, I did grow up in Texas. I'm in Pennsylvania now, but grits are
still available in the grocery. Good ol' nationwide Quaker Foods.

I always put empty tissue boxes in their cage and the cardboard tubes that
are inside toilet rolls and kitchen towels - they love chewing on them.

I use cheap face towels and attach to the cage with a paper clip in each
corner.

Nathan, do you have those cheap stores in Australia like we have here in
UK - everything in the shop is just £1 - I know the US has the same sort of
thing with dollar stores.  Sometimes you can pick up kids toys that would be
fun for ratties to play with.  We have charity shops over here that sell
second hand stuff really cheap too, if you have a good rummage you can
usually find something for rattie playtime :o)
