Please does anyone out there know what could be going on with my rats
left side of his face?  He recently lost his friend, another rat, we
think to old age.  He just came out the  other day scratching at this
huge round meaty, bloody, ulcer on his head.  I tried to rinse him off
and applied neosporin to it yesterday. Today, I cleaned it with alcohol
and then applied more neosporin.  He's eating and drinking and other
than looking like half his brain is coming out, he seems ok.  Any
ideas?  I would appreciate any help anyone can give me.  He is a very
sweet rat and used to be the less dominant rat out of the two.

Any chance we can see a pic of it?
Could it be an abscess?

don't use alcohol- it HURTS! i would actually use saltwater.

does his wound smell bad?

any kind of abscess to the head i would highly suggest taking to the
vet. if it's on his *face* it could very well be a tooth abscess.

this is quill and her tooth root abscess:

His aquarium did smell bad at first, I assumed it was from all the
blood splatter, cuz there was a lot of it.  It was as if he shook his
head all over and got blood all over.  I cleaned it out and wiped the
glass down with vinegar, to help cover the smell and not harm him.
Then this afternoon, I had to clean it again, cuz he must have shook
his head more trying to get the neosporin off and he splattered more
although much less than originally.
I don't know of a vet around here that cares for small animals.  I've
called several, but have found none so far.  I'm desparate.   I took
some amoxicillin and scraped it into his water to try to get some
antibiotics inside him as well as the neosporin.  I'll see if I can
photograph it, but he doesn't really want to be held right now.
Tomorrow I will clean it again with salt water then put the neosporin
on it again.
Thank you
Doris

Your pic of quill is very similar to Mr Grey's sore.   It is under his
eye and in a circular form.  It is not black, but looks like red, raw
meat.  I think he keeps scratching at it.  Mr. Grey's abscess is in the
same spot only much bigger and much gooeyer (if that is a word).  He
doesn't seem to be in pain.  He comes out and gets food from me and is
drinking.  Your pic helped me a lot.  I'll see if he will let me take
his photo tomorrow and get it posted.  He  is a very sweet animal.
Thank you!
