My old man Niko died early this morning. He was 34 months and 5 days. A few
months ago, he started to have rear end degeneration. It progressed slowly.
I was sure it was a pituitary tumor and my vet agreed with me. I decided to
make him as comfortable as can be, living during the daytime on my couch
with his pablum nearby. He was quite happy there, bruxed and licked me all
the time. Last night, I noticed he hadn't touched his food, I checked him
more closely and I could see that he could no longer move his upper body
like he should. I knew it was the end for him. I stayed up as late as I
could with him, although, I know he was not really aware of me, but it
comforted me to talk to him and love him so... I told him in the morning I
would do the right thing for him and bring him in to be pts. I awoke at 7am
to check on him and he had passed. I knew it couldn't have been too long
because his soft brown fur was still warm, his body limp, no longer a
prisoner to that tumor.
~Niko, you made it my little man... you were such a gentle little guy, never
hurt any other rat, loved to be cuddled and loved to give kisses. I will
miss your soft furry curls, that chocolate color of yours... I will miss you
my little man.

A candle for Niko's journey and prayers of comfort for you. You're a good
rattie mom Joanne, and Niko knew you were there and loved him.

I'm so sorry for your loss, Joanne. One thing for sure is Niko had a long
and happy life, and I'm sure didn't want for anything.
My thoughts are with you.

Joanne, I am so sorry for your loss. 34 months! How incredible - it just
shows how well loved he was. It's sweet what you said at the end of your
post, about all the things you loved about him. Isn't it amazing how
they're all so individual.

34 months; that's good going, to say the least. Sounds like he had a
really good and long life with you, and he was happy. I wish my ratties
bruxxed like you said Niko did...

Dear Joanne,
I am sorry for your loss. He sounds a delightful little soul. He will
now be one very happy camper at the bridge and indeed free from his old
body. What a great age too...:) May the coming days bring you comfort
in the many happy memories you have of him.
Kind regards Kate
