For those of you who haven't heard, "Rats: The Great Underrated Pet," a
humourous and informative 70 minute documentary narrated by Emmy winner
Scott Herriott is selling well and getting great reviews. With almost 2
hours of bonus materials, the DVD has been approved by the Rat and
Mouse Club of America and is available here:
http://www.the-rag.com/rtgup.html

If you have rats or are thinking about getting them, you should own
this DVD!

My sister bought this video and I must say, I truly enjoyed it. It's
very educational and full of love for rats.

Seconded. I'm trying to find ways to persuade our
less-than-rat-enthusiastic friends to watch it now & spread the word :)

On the website I read:

"region 1 only, will ship to US & Canada only"

That's a pity. I'm sure there's a market for the documentary in Europe as
well.

I can double check if you like, but as I recall it's actually region
free, despite the above claim.

Also, although there is the shipping note you've mentioned, if you ask I
think you'll find he will ship to Europe - I'm in the UK.

The only point you need to be (slightly) wary of is that as it was
authored for a US market, the frame rate & resolution are those suited
to the US NTSC system (30fps at 720x480 rather than 25fps at 720x576
iirc) rather than the European PAL.

That said, the difference isn't as big as the difference between an NTSC
analogue video tape & a PAL analogue video tape. You'll find virtually
all DVD players & many TVs sold in Europe can handle such signals & as
long as either you DVD player or your TV can, you'll be fine.

It's only if you want to ship a 25fps 720x576 dvd to the US that you
might have problems, as their equipment is ime much less likely to
handle a wide range of encoding standards.

Indeed. No problems here fortunately (& as a last resort you could
always watch it on your PC).

Thanks a lot for the info! I'm sure both my DVD player and TV accept NTSC as
well as PAL, so that won't be a problem. :-)

Yes, unfortunetely, to make it region free would have meant it would
have actually played on less DVD players. We had to make a choice
either region 1 or region free. With region 1, we were assured that at
least in North America we could sell it. When you make region free, it
actually plays on less players so all we'd be getting is a bunch of
people asking for refunds.  If there was, like say 200 people demanding
a region 2 version, it would justify having it made, but otherwise it
would be way too expensive to have that done and we've just now reached
the break even point in the production costs and DVD manufacuring for
the region 1 disk.

You've been slightly misinformed. Here's what DVDInfo has to say about

There is no RCE region encryption.

I can only assume the advice you were given relates to frame rate &
resolution, though I'm not certain. Then again, I can't really imagine
what your dvd author's idea of a region free disc is, if this isn't one.

As for manufacturing, since each is burned to a DVD+R (rather than
pressed as very large quantities would be), I don't know what this is
costing you, but do know you could be doing it yourself, if you were so
inclined, at well under $1 per disk, including case but excluding insert
(I'm not up on typical low volume printing costs) - using very high
quality disks at that price too (this could be squashed to as little as
60c for case & disk). A standard PC with a $70 dvd writer will do the
job, though you can buy a purpose built duplicator capable of making one
to seven copies at a time for a few hundred dollars.

If you feel a version would sell better in Europe if it were at PAL
resolution & frame rate, I'd happily transcode a version for you at no
cost. It wouldn't involve much work for me & this PC can do the job
overnight with excellent results. Again, I don't know what you've been
told about how complex this process is or what price you've been quoted.

I could even run off fifty copies for you at cost, though it might suit
you to duplicate your own. Any more than that & you'd need to find an
alternative such as your existing arrangement. Just an offer, as I
appreciate the work you put in to RTGUP :)

Though I should add better results would be obtained working with the
original source material. Sorry for the OT posts btw. I'll shut up now ;)

I have it as well, but just recently bought a dvd player (yes, I was
dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st century), but it was worth
the wait.
I very much enjoyed it.
