My little hairless female, Peaches, has an abscess on her tummy. She squirms
like crazy now that it has come to the surface and I need to clean it out.
Does anyone have any advice on the best way to remove the covering and
making it easier to get it cleaned out.

TY.

Lynn,
we haven't had that many abscesses ourselves, but the ones we have had
the vet drained them and we kept them cleaned (along with the ratties
during grooming sessions.)
here is the care guide on abscesses from the "rat guide". i trust the
advice here as it's quite sound from what i DO know. Good luck!

Thank you so much. I just wish she would sit still for me. Just trying to
get the abscess accessible has been the worst.

This is a great link. MANY thanks,
Lynn

Lynn,

My hairless female Maggie has had a nagging abscess on the top of her head
for months now.  It's so frustrating!!!  I think I've almost got it to go
away.  In the beginning it was really painful for her when I would try to
drain it, but as it got smaller she didn't seem to mind as much.  The best
way I found was to use my fingernail and sort of "chip away" at the scab.
Sometimes when the scab got really hard, I would put a couple of drops of
sterile water on it to soak and soften it up a bit first.  Sometimes when
nothing else worked, if I just sqeezed the abscess a little, the pus would
force the scab off.  It's all disgusting and sometimes smelly and not fun
for human or rat, but part of the hairless experience I guess!

I hope this helps.

The best advice. Thank you Meghan. I do appreciate getting word from another
friend of the "naked" rats.
I will tell you, that first tear off really was rough...on ME!. My 13 year
old daughter helped and felt the same) I wanted to cry from having to do
that to her,
I will remember all the advice from you great people.
All smiles,
Lynn
