Girls Get New House

I decided that Rafiella and Leona needed a new home.  When my wife and I
looked at the pet store I was sure that the new cage was much bigger than
the one we had.  It is actually just about three inches taller and the same
width and depth but has a complete second floor with another half floor.
The original cage only had the bottom floor and a half floor.  The new cage
also has latters to each level which the girls like.  They seem to be
getting used to the new home since I put them in tonight.

I use carpet pieces on the wire floor to keep them from getting bubble foot.
Are there any better alternative to covering the floor with carpet?  I have
plenty from the last time we recarpeted the house so supply isn't an
problem.

The two girls actually belong to my son who is in his senior year in college
but the apartments do not allow pets and there is a new administration who
doesn't overlook such things like the old one did, so mom and dad are rat
sitting while he is away.  We don't mind because the two little clowns make
us laugh so much at their antics.

See if I can post some links to new pics.

Hi John,
That cage looks really good with the added carpet. Those girls will sure
appreciate the extra padding. The cage is a little small still but with
plenty of out time, the girls should be quite comfortable.
It's so wonderful to see parents enjoying their kids' pets. ;)

My first thoughts were also that the cage isn't exactly huge, but for two
girls it should be okay (although it's rather difficult to guess the exact
dimensions of the cage from a picture). They will surely appreciate the
extra climbing opportuneties, as girls are generally very active (compared
to boys, anyway).

I don't think there are many news readers that support BBCode,
but the links in your second post work just fine. :)

It looks like they're liking their new cage!  I have a really huge cage (a
Martin's 695) for my 3 rats.  It has 3+ levels, and many times I find all 3
each on their own level.  Other times, they're right on top of each other.
I guess they're like people that way.  I had not thought of carpet for the
floors.  I'll be interested to hear if they chew it up or not.  Are you
planning on washing the carpet or do you have enough to just keep replacing
it?  For my floors I use a combo of tile (I got a couple of BIG 12x12 tiles
hoping that would keep their nails filed, but it doesn't) and then towels
towels towels.  My rats have a major thing for towels and they love to
burrow in them.  I get used ones at yard sales, thrift stores and from
family so it keeps the cost down.  In fact, I don't use any kind of shavings
at all.  Just the towels.  They love 'em.

Meghan that's a secret I finally picked up recently, everytime I go to yard
sales or thrift stores I look for receiving blankets, towels, and bath
carpets.  Usually for a quarter or fifty cents each you can pick up
receiving blankets.  Joanne gave me the tip about using bath mats/carpets
and my husband loves how easy it is to clean up after rather than shavings
which always ended up on the floor no matter how careful you are to keep
them from falling.  My boys get bath mats on the floors and then receiving
blankets for cuddling and burrowing.  My senior citizen Charlie loves the
extra padding and warmth of the blankets, he chews and pushes them about.
He loves it!

I used to use vinyl flooring offcuts - advantage over carpet is you can wipe
them clean.
