I'm more inclined to say it's the "or..."
See if you can put a towel down in the area they go. They may limit
themselves to just the towel.
My sister used to put paper towels in the cage and her girls would only
pee on the paper towels, then when my sister would open the cage, they
would bring her the soiled paper towels. Now that was easy clean up. lol

"Or." My rats have an amazing talent for "projectile peeing". I happened
upon dried up riverbeds of it once on the wall behind their tall cage. A
nice wash-down of the wall was all it took to get it looking and smelling
fresh again. I started with great intentions of training them to go in the
pan, and they do actually put most of the solids in there, but the liquids?
It's a free-for-all.

I'd say it's dried pee. :-p
Almost everything my boys walk on gets this sorta sticky after a while (the
window sill, cardboard boxes, the book shelf, the cage wiring, pillows on
the couch, etc. etc.). The good news is that it's pretty easy to clean, but
you will have to do this from time to time.

Hmmm...I thought that was one of those embarrassing subjects, like farting
in church, it gives us the titters but you don't discuss it...this post
cracked me up because my husband had such a negative comment about that
sticky feeling a couple weeks ago!
Last summer I bought an old coffee table to put a cage on for the boys to
crawl on, play on, etc. Recently we did some rearranging of furniture, when
my husband picked up that coffee table he encountered that sticky feeling
and of course I heard the "Oh my God what is that sticky crap on here?"
Well, I was quiet and started to choose my words carefully, he looked at me
and with such incredulity on his face said "Is that pee from the rats?" I
didn't even have to respond -he knew. He then commenced to clean it, but he
claims he needs to sand blast it before he'll use it for the cage shelf
again. I couldn't help but laugh because we've lived with rats for almost
three years now and they've crawled all over our bed, couch, floor, and even
though they have piddled on his arm or leg, it never occured to him that
they were also piddling wherever they walked. My husband, bless his heart,
he loves the ratties.

That is just too funny!!
My hubby is always telling me he doesn't want the rats on the couch
because he knows of the walking dribble. But what he doesn't know is
that the ratties are on that couch when he's not home. lol
What he doesn't know won't hurt him. ;)
