It's been a rough week.  First my persian, Puddy, has been ill.  He was
diagnosed with kidney failure on Tuesday.  It's rough because he's a rescue
cat and he's been with me for a year and half, but he's an old man at 14
y/o.  He's at the vet's and has been on IV fluids since Tuesday.  We're
hoping to get the creatinine and phosphorus levels down and the potassium
level up.  If it works we'll be able to bring him home and put him on a low
protein diet and give subQ fluids every other day.  If it doesn't work, then
we'll have to put him to sleep.  With all this going on, I've found a lump
on my rat Dakota (she's almost a year and half old, so not exactly a young
rat).  I don't know what to do.  I really can't afford to put her through a
surgery that may or may not lengthen her life.  And if I were to chose
euthanasia, what will become of her sister, Chloe?  I'm really not at the
point in my life where I can take on another rat.  What do I do?  I guess
maybe I'm stressed out...gee...can't imagine why.  I'm sorry for all those
that have lost babies.  We've had to put one of our ferrets to sleep in
August, my Grandpa died at the beginning of this month, and now all this is
happening with Puddy and Dakota.  I just wanna hide under my blankie and
sleep the rest of the year away.

Oh my god, Holly, you poor thing... talk about having stress in your
life. Your poor animals, I sure do hope Puddy gets better, it's so
common in older cats.
As for Dakota, 18 months is usually the age for tumors to show up. If
you get it removed, you really should spay her at the same time, this
could give her quite a bit more to her life. But if you choose not to,
she can still live for another 6 to 8 months before needing to be pts.
Without a spay, she could develop more and more tumors. So I really
don't recommend a tumor removal without spay.

Sending you lots of cyber hugs!!!!

Thank you so much, Joanne.  It kind of helps to know what to expect.  My vet
is very expensive for tumor removal on rats.  :(  I think she quoted at
least $180 for one, so I'm not sure how much a spay would be on top of that.
:(  I don't know what I'm going to do because I know Puddy is already at at
least $300, probably closer to $400.  Plus if I get to bring him home there
will be the added cost of special food, and the stuff for subQ fluids.
:(  If not, then there's the cost of euthanasia and cremation.  Ugh.  And
now Chloe every now and then makes these whooping sounds while she sleeps.
I don't know if it's a respiratory problem or not.  It doesn't really sound
like it, but yet it sort of does.  Any ideas?  Yeah, ok, I know that
sentence probably didn't make a whole lotta sense now that I look back on
it.  But still!

Thanks so much, Lisa.  I sure could use them right about now.  I'm sure you
could too.  I'm sorry for the loss of your Charlie.  What a sucky year.
*hugs*

I'm so sorry you've been going through all this heartache.  I know how you
feel about wanting to hide and sleep the rest of the year away, I've had one
hell of a stinking year for bad news too.

My thoughts are with you.  I hope Puddy and Dakota live on a good while yet,
healing vibes being sent their way.

thinking of you holly. when it rains it pours, eh? :(

hang in there with puddy. cats with kidney failure can pull through a
crisis and do very well on subq fluids at home for quite some time. we
had one at work about four months ago who was very very very sick and
on fluids for a week but went home and has been doing fantastically.

Thanks for that encouraging thought.  Right now I feel just about hopeless.
I haven't been able to get ahold of the vet and she was supposed to call me
today with the results.  So I'm hoping that maybe they didn't come in.  But
regardless I would've appreciated a phone call.  :(  Now I have to sit here
and wait until Monday to see how Puddy is doing.
