Hi All,

I find myself at another crossroads in my little ratties lives ..........

I posted recently about Jerry and his slow decline from a pituitary tumour,
which I now think is probably reaching it's peak.

I've lost previous rats to this, but they literally did not move and were
not aware I was there. Jerry has definately stopped being so aware of
things, and he doesn't LOOK the same (I hope you guys understand what I
mean, but it's in the eyes and face, it doesn't look like J) I know some
people say if their rat stops eating and drinking and not moving then it's
time, but

Apologies! I hit send on accident.

Anyway, Jerry will eat baby food and Complan, and will even attempt a tiny
yoggie drop if I crumble it, and he'll eat it from my palm. He simply cannot
hold anything in his paws.

He still wanders around the flat, but sort of without direction?! He doesn't
sit still in the cage and runs alone the bottom around and around in the
long rectangle.

*sigh* - I feel that he isn't at deaths door, but he certainly isn't getting
any quality of life right now and he doesn't seem a happy boy :-( I wish I
could comfort him as I have been able to with my previous poorly babies, but
he doesn't like it. When he was fit and well he always loved hugs.

I always struggle with my guilt when it comes to euthanasia day, although I
know in my heart his situation isn't right. I know his condition will only
get worse and I don't want him to be in pain :-(

Any advice welcome as ever peeps xxxx

I'm sorry you're at that point.  :(  And yes, I think I do understand the
not looking the same.  You can just sense it.  I believe animals always give
you sign when they're ready to go.  Have you seen it with Jerry yet?  It's
the same way you can just see that they're not the same.  It's just instinct
I guess.  In any case, you and Jerry are in my thoughts and prayers.

I'm so sorry to hear Jerry isn't doing well.  It does sound like he is ready
to be helped on his way, bless his heart - if he no longer has quality of
life and doesn't seem happy, and there is no chance of improvement.  My
thoughts are with you as you make this most difficult decision, it's one of
the hardest things to do, but I know you will make the right one as you are
a fab rattie mum.

I sure do know what you mean.
I remember my vet once telling me I should put down one of my boys, but
I just couldn't. She told me that she will leave it up to me but not to
wait to long because we could see it in his eyes. She said his eyes are
dull, there's no life left. It broke my heart...
Be strong... I'm sure you know already what is best for the little one.

For me I know once I start thinking of having one of my pets PTS I know
deep inside that the decision has already been made but that I am
outwardly just trying to get use to the idea.  If that makes sense to
you.  It has to be quality of life over quantity and Rats never complain
so you really have to make the hard decision for them.  May you find the
strength to follow through on whatever decision you make.

Kind regards to you and Jerry.

Thanks everyone for your great responses as always .............

I've made the appointment for Jerry's final journey tomorrow morning :-(

He's even got worse since last night, he sits and rocks with his eyes shut
and I think that's the closest I am going to get to him telling me he's in
pain :-( He ate some baby food earlier but his eyes were shut the whole
time. He is so frail and must weigh nothing at all.

I know it's not nice to have favourites but I think Jerry had that part of
me from the very first day I saw him - It hurts so much to see him the way
he is today.

You were right - I think I knew what had to be done, it was finally
accepting it. It is irrelevant he is hopping around meekly, he doesn't know
where he is going, has no sense of direction, he is looking uncomfortable
and I believe has less quality of life because of it.

Thanks again for your kind words .......... I'll post again soon xx
