I've noticed this with a couple of older not-so-fit-anymore rats. The
behaivour seems to consist of spending long periods of time sitting or
sleeping in the food bowl, and then suddenly throwing huge amounts of the
food out into the cage, as if hunting for a special morsel, digging or
making a more comfortable bed.
I'm pretty sure it's not boredom, since there's plenty to do, and it's not
loneliness - there being plenty of other ratties in the same (very large)
cage.
I thought it might be very finicky eating habits steming from old age.
Anyone else seen this?

Oh yes, I've seen this. It's usually with my sick ones. I really don't
know what they do in that food bowl. I'm thinking it's their way of
wanting to eat but not finding what they really need. :(

That tallys - Scampi isn't the fittest of rats ATM - she has a slight
rattle in her chest (keeping an eye on it - probably a course of baytril
coming up), and Bing (who used to do it) was on her last legs at the
time.
Maybe some of our homemade build-up goo (condensed milk, dried milk
powder and Nesquick powder mixed up) for her!
