There may be a slight chance that cross species transmission is
possible between cat and dog but I'm not sure about rats.
Here's something I found: http://www.nwk9.com/parvovirus.htm
Dogs and puppies can contract parvo even if they never leave their
yards. Parvo virus, despite what you might hear, is NOT an airborne
virus. It is excreted in the feces of infected dogs, and if someone --
human, dog, bird, etc. -- steps in (or otherwise comes in contact with)
the excrement, the possibility for contamination is great. Some people
speculate that birds invading a dog's food dish can deposit the
parvovirus there. If you think you may have come in contact with
parvovirus, a strong solution of bleach and water does kill the virus,
so you can wash your shoes and clothes, even your hands with it, to
reduce the risk of infecting your dog.
I hope this helps!

Thanks , I had a look at the info from the link and I think their pup is
out of the incubation period, I will have to tell them that all the cleaning
they have
done with disinfectant will have to be re-done with bleach.
Our own dog (an adult German Shephard) has been vaccinated and has his
yearly boosters.
The house I was at did not have their pups vacinated.
Their has been 3 young dogs in their street died from the virus within the
past two weeks and I am
concerned about the pup that has so far pulled through as she is very weak.
I will have to tell them about the possabilty of infecting cats as they have
three aduklts and five 4 week old kittens
I am relieved it's not an air bourne virus and that after reading the link
it looks like Art and Tar are safe from the virus
as I feel I should pay their house a visit again tonight and check on their
pup who still is not eating , I will take up some glucose
to put in her water etc.
Now I can give Art and Tar huge hugs, they missed their hus last night but I
was too worried about infecting them .....................
just got them from their cage and they are with me now :-)
Thanks,
Mandie.

I've just had a quick look online and from what I've read canine parvo virus
cannot be transmitted to animals other than those of the dog family such as
wolves and foxes, but it can very occasionally infect cats.

We lost a puppy to parvo when I was young, it's a horrible disease, but Art
and Tar will be just fine :o)

Thanks Tracey, you and Joanne have been very helpful,
I have Art and Tar at the computer with me now all though Tar looks a bit
puzzled
as my flat screen monitor stopped working late last night and I have a huge
old one here ,
an excuse to get a new flat screen as Art and Tar have less room here.
There is some good information on those pages from the links which I have
read
and will also pass on to the people who have the pup who is home from the
vet.
She is still so weak and will not eat. Before the parvo Shilo (the pup who
is home)
would not eat unless Bear (the pup who died) was there, they had been
together for 6 months
and Shilo has a really nervous nature, so we are really concerned about her.
I will keep you updated on the outcome and hopefully it will be a good one.
I'll go now before Art and Tar scent mark the rest of the CDs I forgot to
move :-)
Thanks,
Mandie.

Bless her little heart, I do hope she pulls through and is back to full
health soon. Sending her well wishes and cuddles, and lots of scritches to
Art and Tar too of course :o)
