Frenchy is about 1 year old ( We were told she's 6 months old when we
got her
about 5 months ago). She is very active and so far very healthy (until
last
Sunday).
Last Sunday (during President's day weekend) afternoon we noticed she
is sick:
hunch, difficulty walking, lethargy, walking with a stagger, shaking
etc (no
sign of respiratory issues like sneezing, difficulty breathing). The
day before
that (Saturday afternoon) she was doing great. As most of the vet
hospitals are
closed on Sunday, we took her to Petco to show to a small animal
specialist and
he said she is somewhat sick and to told us to take her to the vet in a
day or
two if she doesn't improve.
We fed her "baby food" (Gerber's etc as per the Petco guy's suggestion)
that
night. But by Sunday night she has the secretion coming out of her
eyes/nose. (I
have read on this newsgroup about this secretion from eyes/nose.) She
got worse
by the night and by Monday morning it got even worse. She became weaker
and
looked sicker.
I got a vet appointment on Monday afternoon and the doctor gave her
some fluids,
antibiotics etc and the x-ray showed that there are no masses in her
body. After
2 days with the doctor, we brought her home and her condition has
improved
compared to before.
The only think the doctor said is that probably she is suffering from
Stomach
pain due to constipation.
With this background, here are my questions:
---------------------------------------------------------------
1) Since she came back, she is a bit jittery (her whole body is
shaking). Is it
due tothe antibiotics etc? We are still giving her the antibiotics
orally the
doctor gave us - for 3-4 more days. I do see that the 'shaking" has
decreased
considerably since the day we brought her back home (2 days ago.) I
hope that is
a temporary condition.
2) Since she is back, I have a feeling she can not see well or hear
well.
Previously, if I go near the cage (a wire cage - not glass one) ,she
would
somehow figure out that I am watching and the moment I touch the cage,
she will
be very eager to go out of the cage. Now a days, she mostly likes to
sit in her
little "home"/tunnell inside the cage. Also, her eating habits have
changed!
What she used to love to eat before, she does not eat it now (only
selected
parts of her prevoius favorite food.)
3) this is the MOST intriguing question for me:
In the last 2 days i noticed that she loves to eat PAPER. Not just bite
the
paper, but actually eating it like food. I make sure she has enough
food to eat
and esp the food she loved but she just can't get enough of the paper.
I am
afraid that eating paper will make her sick etc. esp since the doctor
told us
she might hav esuffered from constipation.
4) I watched her carefully in the last 5-6 months, I have not heard her
grind
her teeth much (not at all as far as I know), but since she's back from
the
hospital, she does that very very frequently. any ideas?
This is our very first pet rat and i am quite ignorant about these
issues until I
started reading this newsgroup. Any suggestions / info is appreciated.
thanks,
tian

Sorry folks, all the lines got broken. Looks like my previous post is
an excerpt from John Milton's Paradise Lost :)
I'll be more careful with my posts next time.

Hi Tian,
Did you see a rat savvy vet? From what you described, it sounds
neurological or even an ear infection.
Or at worst, and my first guess a pituitary tumor.
What antibiotics is she on?
Why did the vet decide it was constipation? Did he feel a hardness in
her rectal area? Did he check for a blockage? Have you seen her feces?
What does it look like?
I have noticed a rat in pain will do a lot of chewing/eating useless
stuff. Not wanting to come out of the cage, another sign of pain/sickness.
Did your vet check her lungs?
The vet was able to take xrays? Did he sedate her first or was she
lethargic enough to not move during the xray?
What do you usually feed her?
She does sound like a very sick rat. But I would bring her to a second
vet, one that is more experienced with pet rats.
Please stick around and keep us updated on the little one.

Thanks for your reply. I appreciate it. Here are some answers to your
questions and comments.
--Did you see a rat savvy vet?
A) The vet hosipital we took her to is recommended on www.rmca.org. I
believe they are good. Other than that I dunno what to say :)
--What antibiotics is she on?
A) "Baytril liquid suspension"
--Why did the vet decide it was constipation? Did he feel a hardness in
her rectal area? Did he check for a blockage? Have you seen her feces?
A) I am not really sure why the vet ("she") thought it's constipation.
She said the xrays didn't find any masses and no sign of respiratory
illness and then mentioned "constipation" because she said Frenchy's
having some pain in her stomach as she "squealed" when she was held and
touched around the stomach. The rectal area does not show any signs of
illness and her feces are just as normal.
--I have noticed a rat in pain will do a lot of chewing/eating useless
stuff.
*) She eats her food better than 1-2 days ago.She still likes the
Gerber baby's Mango baby food. We gave it to her yesterday and today in
addition to her normal food (Reggie Rat stuff she usually liked very
much before getting sick - now she's a bit selective and picks certain
parts of this Reggie Rat mix)
--Not wanting to come out of the cage, another sign of pain/sickness.
*)She does come out of the cage and enjoys running around. But not as
enthusiastic as before. I have noticed that the fingers on her "hands"
and "legs" do not have as much grip as before. Previously she could
easily climb wired stuff - almost like the "pet birds" do. Now, she can
not go on steep inclined surfaces because she does not have a good hold
with her fingers. Maybe related to some "nervous/neural condition"?
For e.g. if she is kept on top of the cage, she is shaky and nervous
because it's a wire cage and she is afraid her legs will slip thru the
holes between the wires. So she pretty much prefers flat surfaces
(floor, carpet etc).
--The vet was able to take xrays? Did he sedate her first or was she
lethargic enough to not move during the xray?
*) When the vet took x-rays she spent the night before in the hospital
and she is pretty sick the day before. I think she was not sedated for
the x-ray because the day before x-ray she was pretty much sedentary.
--What do you usually feed her?
1) Reggie Rat 2) Forti-Diet (Kaytee brand)
--She does sound like a very sick rat. But I would bring her to a
second
vet, one that is more experienced with pet rats.
*) She is doing much better and I hope this continues to get better. I
wonder if she continues this way after we stop giving her the
anti-biotic (it'll last 2-3 more days)
Things that still concern me are:
1) not enough (or "no") response to my calling sounds.
2) still prefers to go into her cozy "home" inside the cage.
previously (before the sickness), she is mostly eager waiting to go out
of the cage and only goes inside her "home" if she is bored/sleepy or
tired after exercise.
3) still eating paper!
But overall I am (and she is) much happier than when she got sick 5-6
days ago.

Has Frenchy a cagemate, or is she on her own?
Hope there's some improvement.

If your vet was recommended by the rmca, then most likely he's a
knowledgeable vet. So that's good.
How old is your girl?
Were you feeding her human foods just before her lethargy?
Don't stop the antibiotic for at least 10 days. And I would remove all
paper from the cage.
When you cuddle her, does she feel very warm?
Is she alone or does she have a cage buddy?
Her improvement is a really good sign.
