Hi all, Merry seems to have symptoms showing he has a pituitary tumor, but
he's on Baytril in case of ear infection. This morning I awoke to flopping
sounds coming from the cage and it turned out to be Merry. It seemed like he
was having leg spasms as he would get himself sitting up right and start to
clean his face and suddenly he'd launch himself up and forward, usually
landing on his side. It seemed to be happening every few seconds. Could he
be have seizures or something? Or could he have just been trying to expend
some built up energy?

Because of his loss of balance and motor skills he hasn't been having a lot
of out time. He always seems to be tired out after the medicine and feeding
sessions so I put him back in the cage.

I quickly pulled him out and he acted normal in my arms so I popped him in
the sick tank for observation. He's sitting quietly in there with no more
signs of problems.

Any ideas?

Rats do this when they panic. He is having such a difficult time with
his illness. Is he gasping yet? It does help when you take them out of
the cage, it seems to give them more comfort.

He hasn't done any gasping yet. I noticed he was bruxing and making other
noises with his teeth while I was feeding him some oatmeal. He hasn't done
that much recently. He took all of his medicine too, though he fought me a
little more than usual. I listened closely to see if I heard anything
unusual in his breathing but couldn't detect anything. I'd like to hold him
more to help him keep relaxed but he just won't stay still when he's out of
the cage. Thanks.

Joanne,
Just wanted to let you know I had him pts. this afternoon. He had another
attack, lasting longer than the first and nothing I did could relax him.

I hope it wasn't panic on my part to do so, but I felt this was a definite
sign of his symptoms getting worse, and my vet told me to bring him in if
they did as it would likely be the pituitary tumor. I just didn't want it to
progress like Arwen's did.

Thanks for always trying to help, I really appreciate having people like
you, and everybody else, on this list to turn to when times get tough:)

I'm so very sorry Lauren.
I figured it was soon time when you mentioned his stance and behavior.
He's much better now.

Thanks everybody:) I'm sure all the other ratties up there are keeping him
busy. We're getting through it and focusing now on taking care of Pippin. He
goes in to have his tumor removed Thursday morning. I'll update afterward of
course.

It was a very brave and kind thing to have him PTS.  It is horrid to
watch an animal in distress and you did the right thing..:)

Kind regards Kate
