How Tight of Space Can a Rat Escape??

Hi Everyone!

I just bought myself a baby rat yesterday (my second rat) and bought a
couple cages, one for home and one for work so I can have her with me
all the time.  The cage I bought for home is a really cool, large wire
cage with 3 levels, but I was wondering just how tight of a space a rat
can fit through, especially when they are larger and mature.  I've
heard they are very intelligent and can figure out how to open cage
doors and all, something I will definitely look into securing.  The
wires on the cage are about just over a 1/4" apart, but some by the
doors and edges look as though if they were pushed hard enough, they
could be spread to almost 1/2".  Is this something I need to be
concerned about or have I watched too many movies?

Any help is appreciated... Thank You!

1/2" and 1/4" is too small for rats to squeeze through.
You should know though that rats are highly social animals and for your
sweetie to be happy and healthy she will need to have a same sex buddy
to live with. They really do need other rats to groom, play with and
sleep with.
Also, make sure your cage is not a hamster cage, rats need far more
space than that. ;)
BTW, welcome to the wonderful world of loving rats!!

Either get one from the same cage where you got the current ... fix ... or
get one from a reputable breeder (not a feeder rat), and quarantine it from
the current one for a minimum of 2 weeks. Otherwise one might give the
other a disease it's not ready for!

I found a lovely old parrot cage, but it's a little rusty and missing a
door. I can rig one up with a cooling rack, but if I sand off the rust
can I spray paint it with rustoleum? The floor is also metal, any
suggestions on stuff to cover it with? what I like is it's size, 19,19,
and 29 high. some of the bars are vertical and some horizntal, and not
too far apart.

Got rid of the parrot cage. just not much good. Got a nice cage at a
yard sale. Cleaned the new ratties residence in a very complete manner.
Clean hammocks, needlepoint canvas to cover the wire floor,(it's a nice
martins) hung a string of cherrios a seed stick a rope, a cardboard
hut, fresh litter, water, took apart the Wobust Wodent wheel and lots
of clean toys and new food, they are SO happy today. this was a Big
cleaning. Got to feed fewer yogies and chocolate, they're getting
pudgie. The other 2 got their's done 2 days ago, and just a wipe down
and little stuff today, but washed their favorite hammock. Whew, Tired.
that parrot cage could,ve been fixed up, but don't have the room. Not
bragging, justfeeling happy  getting something done. Kind of rare
around here. Hope everyone is having a good day today. Sritches to all
the critters.

I didn't buy it, it's the  cage the rats I took in came in, also the
previous "mom and dad" had provided them with the wheel too, plus a
sheet with their names on it. I lost the list for about a week, I was
calling Hope Hood, cuz she has a dark head, and also she's the alpha
rat, The one Named Solace I was calling speckles, and the one named
Dream I was calling Dinky, odd that I had the first letter of each
adorable ratties name.
I freaked out a few days ago, I thought Hope was pregnant! But their
mom, who lovd them dearly, told me she has always been a bit pudgy and
I Was giving them more treats than they needed.
My 2 dumbos are big rats and are a bit squishy. They ignored the wheel
I got them. They had been being spooked in my room lately, so I moved
them in my room, where I spend a good deal of my time. So I can look
over at them when typing.
The boy I had here was in my room, and when I typed, he would brux
loudly, that may have been part of the problem, now that I think about
it, He may have thought I was agressively bruxing him.I feel bad about
that, if I had been more patient, and had him nuetered, and not had him
in my room, but I Did get 3 nasty bites. Miss him even so.

Mousy and Squeeky don't react to the typing like that. there is a
mirror on the dresser, I thought that maybe the mirror was scaring
them, so I put up cardboard to cover it, and put some on top of the
cage and put some unlit scented candles near them for aroma-therapy. I
guess I should try to get some lavender scented,, it's supossed to be
calming, right? They do seem to enjoy being in my room better today.
The other 3, I try to handle each one indevidually everyday, and let
them run around, supervised, in the bathroom. It's the only
rat-proofable room.

Many people use the bathroom for out time.
For my gang I have basically converted my dining room into my rat room. lol

For out time I put my rats on my bed. I put a small cage and a box on
the bed so they have some places that they can go to and feel safe. I
don't have much along the lines of toys yet though.

We do that. They have their own towels, duvet & a top sheet. Beware
mattress chewers though. I've explained the cost analysis to them re
mattress replacement but I'm not sure they all understand.
