Hi ,
I've been away from the group for a couple of months doing the final
assessments for college but that's taking a back seat at the moment due to
worry about Arts health.

Art is now 9 months old, he has been in good health up until last night. I
went to take Art and Tar out for their nightly play and when I picked Art up
he squeaked really loudly, I thought at first I must have startled him but
then discovered that if I touch him in the lower stomach area he is really
in pain, he squeaks if he walks over a risen cusion or towel that rubs him
in the same area. Today he has been shying away from being picked up not
that I would attempt to incase I hurt him.
I let him walk into the cat carrier to take him to the vet so I wouldn't
have to pick him up, but he squeaked a lot at the vets just on a light touch
to the stomach area.
The vet does not have a good knowledge on rats but gave him a baytrol
injection and some to bring home.

There are no signs of injury and there are no heights that he could fall
from in his cage.
He is eating well and is reasonably lively (not quite as lively as normal)

If there is no change in the morning I am going to seperate them for a few
hours so that I can check Arts droppings and urine output to see if they
look abnormal in any way.

Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing this please.

That's exactly what I was going to ask about the droppings and urine.
It could be a bladder infection or even a blockage in the intestine.
What exactly is he eating?

Hi Joanne,
He eats a regular rat mix (reggie rat) and gets fresh veg, grapes etc
he also eats cheerios when out as a treat.
He has been in a seperate cage for the past two hours and so far he has
passed nothing.
I've just went out and got some brocolli to try and aid as a natural
laxative and some cranberry juice
as well (all though the shop did not sell 100% cranberry juice)
They both are really down at being in seperate cages :-(

He is a chewer though, all though I don't think he has 'gotten' to anything
this week, so far it's been a leather settee, suede trainers and a sued
waistcoat.

His food is good.
Try and get him to eat the veggies and also the cranberry juice is a
good idea.
You may need to massage his tummy and see if you can feel any hardness
inside close to his bum.

Hi Joanne,
I just got back in and woke him up , he has urinated a very small amount
that looks
clear with no blood but no droppings yet.
I will try the massaging, only thing is he squeaks really loudly with the
lightest of touches anywhere
near his stomach.

Still no poops? I would be very concerned with a blockage. But if he's
not eating, then there won't be any poops.
It could also be crystals in his bladder which can cause a urinary
blockage but the vet would have felt a very large and hard bladder.
Any chance you could try finding a rat savvy vet?

Hi Joanne,
I just tried the massaging, all though he squeaks loudly when touching his
abdomen he seems to be in even more pain around his testicles.
I think that may be the problem area and both the vet and myself totally
missed it. Any ideas ?
The vets surgery is closed now but I will speak to him tomorrow.

He may be constipated. I hope that's all that it is. Is he on
antibiotics now?
Try and give him some veggies and fruits, no bananas, lots of liquids,
even gatorade if you can, this will help with his energy level.

12.52 am, still no poops, he has had grapes and brocolli etc.
He is very sore around his testicle area and is starting to look sorry for
himself all though he is still eating.
I am phoning the vet for another appointment but I have phone the rest in
the surrounding areas and none of them have much knowledge of rats :-(

Poor little mite.  I hope it's something easily sorted and he gets back to
full health soon.

Thanks Tracey, it's heartbreaking seeing him in so much pain and little Tar
is missing him in the cage.

On getting up this morning there were quite a few little poops in the cage
but Art is no less painful around the back end and testicles, I'm really
baffled.
The vet was fully booked all day but they gave me a 'sit in' appointment for
6.30pm tonight
so Art will be seen between 6.30pm and 8.30pm.
