Art, an update, still don't know what's wrong with him

I took Art to the vet earlier and he felt all round his tummy and testicles,
the bit that is causing the most pain to tough is kind of between the side
of the lower abdomen and the testicles.
I told him that the urine was clear , he was passing droppings and not off
his food.
He felt all round him and agreed there was no sign of injury and that his
bladder etc felt normal.
He gave Art another antibiotic injection and a pain killing injection (and
remarked on how tough his skin is)
He asked me to hand in a sample of Arts uring tomorrow.
It's really baffling as to why he is in so much pain andheartbreaking to
hear him squeaking if he rubs against a towel or his bed :-(

Poor baby boy... :(
Are you giving him meds at home too?

He has baytrol twice daily (only once today as he got the injection)
I woke him up when I came back in (I keep weird hours as I'm a carer for my
Mum who lives near by)
I managed to get a urine sample to hand in tomorrow , I popped it in the
fridge for tonight.
I gave the cage a good clean when we came back from the vets to make sure
the sample wasn't corrupted
with brocoli or cheerios etc.

I don't even have my pet rats yet, so it's highly likely I don't know
what I'm talking about. That being said, have you tried any heat or
cold treatments? I was thinking if you made a little fabric bag and
filled it with dry rice, you could warm it in the microwave or chill it
in the freezer and then he could lay on it. It wouldn't cure anything,
but it might provide comfort.

Also, have you tried posting your question on any online vet forums
like alt.med.veterinary? A vet who was well informed about rats might
be really sympathetic to your situation, since your own vet isn't very
rat experienced.

Good luck and I hope Art feels better soon.

Thanks Kim, I didn't know about that newsgroup I will post there.
The bag is a good idea but I'm afraid Art is a compulsive chewer
he eats his way through everything.

Just had a quick look at the group and I see The Puppy Wizard haunts that
group too (he's a nuisance on the dog newsgroups).  I recommend killfiling
him as his posts are utter nonsense.

Did the vet say anything about an abcess?

Have you looked at ratguide.com? There is a lot of detailed health info
there complete with pictures.

What an amazing site, thanks for the link. I've printed off some information
to take to my vet tomorrow.

The vet has made no mention of an abcess.

I've posted Arts urine smaple results below.

You must be so worried and frustrated.  Hopefully the urine sample will shed
some light on what is wrong.

I know this maybe a silly question but I do remember my little chap Berkley
at around 9-10 months old having a prblem with his gonad area being sore to
touch, he had the biggest wax plug in his willy you have ever seen. I don't
know if you know about these but if boys get quite portly and are a bit slap
dash about washing those bits they get this horrible lump of hard yellowish
gunk that you need to squeeze out. It is not a nice job but one of those
things you have check with boys. If you gently squeeze just below his willy
if it is hard then apply a slight pressure with your fingers  pushing up to
the opening and it will pop out. Like I said not a nice job.

Also could it be an intersurseption where the intesitne goes inside itself.
You did say he was a chewer? Might have something stuck. Have you asked for
an X Ray?

The vet has asked me to weigh Art daily and if he starts loosing exessive
weight he will x-ray.
Do you need to give a rat anasthetic for an x-ray?
Mandie @k@ Zepherous - 27 May 2006 03:06 GMT
The urine test revealed a very high level of protein which is not diet
related as I am careful not to feed
too many nuts and seeds etc. and an extemely high level of ketones , no
sugar and no blood.
The vet said this was unusual and had no idea as to what the levels
indicate.
I've been searching the net for a couple of hours and am pretty sure it
could be kidney stones or bladder stones, maybe crystals stuck in the
ureatha,
I am going to speak to the vet first thing tomorrow and suggest this.

That was also my first thought with the crystals in the bladder and
urethra.
I wonder if Clavamox or even Septra would be a better med?

Thanks for the advice on meds, I will pass that on to my vet.
I phoned them this morning and told them what I thought it was but they said
that
I would have to submit another sample of Arts uring to them on Monday to be
sent
away for testing as they do not have the facilities to advance test there,
the lab is closed until Tuesday due to
a bank holiday and it could take a few days, I told them I was willing to
pay for the priority service but
even taht means not getting a result until at least Thursday.
Do you know if there is anything I can give him in his diet to help?

I would give him plenty of veggies and also try papaya, I know in
rabbits it helps with their gut flora.
Has there been any changes yet?

Thanks Joanne ,
I wouldn't of thought of papaya, I will get some tomorrow and add it to his
diet,
he has been getting loads of other fresh fruit and veggies.
Art is a lot better now, I have posted a full update, (the update turned out
to be a novel, so much to mention :-)

Thanks for the info, I checked Art and found no sign any wax plug,
but it's something I will remember for the future.

I've posted Arts urine sample results below.
