I just had to share that our rat cage is finished. Hubby did a
fantastic job (while publicly maintaining his lack of enthusiasm for
rats). He is a recreational woodworker so I marketed this project to
him as one in which he could hone his skills. Mission accomplished!
Last night my daughter and I laid out our first arrangement of
hammocks, nesting boxes, etc. When my husband saw it, he said "S**t!
These are some really spoiled rats! I pointed out to him that all of
the stuff in the cage was stuff we had laying around the house anyway
and that watching them play and climb is part of the fun in having them
in the first place. I'll have to get some pictures.
The hardest thing now is the wait until after we return from a summer
trip to go get our ratties! (I didn't think we should get them and then
immediately leave.)
Cheers!

We will need pics!! Is it all out of wood? Did you cover the wood with
anything? Pee and wood make quite an odor.
You are right in thinking that vacation first, rats after is the best
approach. Once these rats are in the house, you won't be able to leave
them for one minute. ;)
Tell the rats' daddy, he's a good man!

Joanne,
It is actually made from melamine shelving, but it is painted with a
non-toxic appliance grade epoxy paint that dries as hard as glass. The
frames are made of poplar and are stained and then coated with a
non-toxic shellac. He made a recess in the back of the door frames for
the wire mesh to sit in so that the doors close well. The cage is
similar in design to your Big Boy cage, just not as big. I have pieces
of fleece to velcro to the shelves.
Hubby IS a good man and I feel very loved. If going to great lengths to
build a beautiful home for animals you profess not to like isn't love,
then I don't know what is.

Wow, sounds like a super cage your hubby has made, your ratties will love
it!
Rest assured once the ratkins arrive your husband will see what wonderful
and loving little creatures they are and change his mind about them :o)

I hope so because I've conveniently overlooked telling him that I will
likely come home with three rats instead of two. These are the kinds of
details best left unspoken at this point. :)
