Hi All.

Purely out of curiosity... does anyone know roughly at what age do rats
reach their full size?

Thanks!

I've always thought it was 7 months but then my sister recently read
somewhere that they continue to grow all their lives but I've never
noticed this in mine. Mine seem to stop growing after about 7 months.

Thanks for getting back!  One more question...  are rats like fish
where they grow larger if you have them in a larger cage or open area
to roam around, or have limited growth if they are in smaller cages or
environments?

Thanks again!

No, not at all like fish in that respect. I've kept fish, so I know what
you mean. In a smaller environment, rats will get fat and lazy and very
unhealthy. They need a large cage and plenty of out time for exercise.
The bigger the cage the better, the more levels the better, lots of cage
floor space is important too. Also aquariums are not suitable for rats.
They need a good wire cage which permits lots of ventilations.

Also, in a wire cage they are free to climb. :)

Thank you for your help.  I have my female rat in a large 3 level cage
and she has lots of out time for running around.  I was going to get
her a companion, but didn't because I'm her companion.  I take her to
work with me every day and she is extremely spoiled.  She is taken out
of the cage frequently and is very loving towards everyone... and what
a personality!  She's playful and has definitely grown very attached to
me.  All I've got to say is if my landlord found out, I'd be in deep
you know what!  LOL!

Thanks again

It's great that you're spending so much time with her, but she really
would benefit from a rat friend too - someone to talk over ratty issues
with that humans couldn't understand, someone to push about a bit when
she's feeling, um, ratty & of course someone to join in laughing at you
when one of them's made you look a fool; life's just not as much fun
otherwise.

If it did come to that, would you have somewhere to send her/them? That
might be a horrible prospect, but better than having to have them killed
& probably better than you being evicted :/

I agree with Michael... No humans can replace the love and companionship
of another rat, no matter how much time you spend with the rat.
