Hello everyone!

We got our rats (2 not 3) and we're very excited. One of them is a
champagne and is the most social of the three. The black and white
hooded one has gotten a lot more comfortable and went down my
daughter's shirt today. The third one has been hiding in a saltine
cracker box for 3 days. She does stick her head out from time to time
to pick up the food I leave for her and take it back into her little
lair. I also gave her some paper shreds and I hear her nesting with it.
She hasn't been interacting with the other rats hardly at all and I
haven't seen her drink any water (maybe she drinks at night?) She did
sniff my finger three times today and all three times she bit me. They
seemed like experimental bites or warning bites because they didn't
hurt me at all. I think she might just be really scared, but I'm new to
rats. Does anyone have any thoughts on this and what I can do to make
her feel more comfortable besides just leaving her alone for a few more
days? The other rats seem to be having a great time exploring their
cage.

The champagne one is supposedly being "shared" by my daughter and me.
My daughter said that I could give her a first name and she would give
a middle name. The result...Agatha Scrat.

Thanks in advance,

Kim

Hi Kim welcome to the wonderful world of loving rats!
From your first sentence, I think you meant to write: 3 not 2. I got a
little confused there. lol
I would pull the three girls out of the cage and stick them down your
shirt for a couple of hours each time and you can do this several times
a day. This will make all three rats bond to each other and to you
making them feel more secure. You can put a sweatshirt over a tshirt and
let them get all nice and cozy while you watch tv or read a book. You
will see in no time they will no longer fear you in the cage. You can
also do this one on one with the one that is most scared to give her
extra socializing.

Hi Joanne,

Yep. I was confused. It's late and I'm on a diet so my mind is really
thinking about ice cream and cupcakes right now. Thanks for the advice.
I just didn't want to push her too fast. The hooded rat (who I think my
daughter has named Linda Nellie) has been claimed by my daughter. Then
we have Agatha Scrat who is shared which leaves the one I'm a little
worried about as mine. I haven't named her yet because I haven't really
been able to see her. I did evict her from the cracker box because it
was starting to stink. Tomorrow, she's going down my shirt and she's
just going to have to get over it.

know it!
