Hi all,
Three and a half years ago we had a litter of rats (petshop-bought
rat was pregnant!). We sold most, and kept two for ourselves, which died
less than two years later: inbreeding probably contributing to their short
lives.

Anyway, at the time, we took some video of them (only webcam stuff
shoved through a movie editor afterwards), and I've finally got around to
making the three films we made available on the net.

Cool :)

Baby rats are always cute.

Can I ask if the music used is copyright free? I'm not policing, just
trying to find out where & what I could make use of myself for a similar
project.

They were very very cute.

Still trying to find out how to get a licence for music used in this way.

I've looked in to it - £250 a year seems to be the price to do it
legally. I'm going to change the music for Public domain stuff - usually
(very) old material where the copyright has expired - there are websites
where you can download the stuff.

I was going to suggest the public domain.  Many times you can find music
just as good or more appropriate for your clips.

i think it's the only way to do it. No wonder Pubs and Clubs complain
about the licensing authorities (I gather they pay somwhere in 4
figures).

Video isn't showing up for me. I can hear the audio and the WMP controls
appear, but no video.

I know Microsoft explorer prompts you to confirm that active content is
ok, maybe there's an option in Firefox that has a similar control. Given
the fact that you get WMP controls, I would have thought this was an
unlikely reason. Does it happen with all the films? Is it maybe appearing
in another window?

Yes, it happens with all the films, and no it isn't appearing in another
window. Oddly enough, if I download the movies to my computer, I can
watch them just fine in WiMP.

FWIW Same set up here & it plays.

Try downloading the file directly & then playing it:
http://homepages.tesco.net/david.ryman/rats/video/basil%20the%20rat.wmv

Windows Media Player should tell you if it doesn't have the right codec,
which is perhaps the problem.

You could also try a decent player. I like Zoomplayer, but that's
commercial. Media Player Classic & VLC media player are both free iirc &
very good.

Same here, but I found if I right click where the video should be, and then
select plugins and then options, there was nothing there to change but if I
kept this screen open and moved it out of the way I could see the video.

The babies are so cute :-)

Yep - I don't think we would have missed it, despite the shock of finding
out she was pregnant!

> Hi Dave, I would like to see your rat video but when I click on rats it says that I need a "plug-in". So I tried that and it said no suitable plug in found. I have a Mac, and have quicktime. I know the vast majority of programs are for pcs. I have one, but can't afford to have 2 computers on-line.
Do you have any idea what I need? Like flash player or something?  I
know there is an anti- Mac person around, please don't hassle me OK?
Anyhow Dave, if you know I would appreciate it, thanks

Not at all sure. The format of the files is WMV - Windows Media (usually
embedded in the browser). I'd be surprised if the Mac doesn't have a media
player that reads WMV format: If it does, maybe this can somehow be
attached to the browser as a plug-in. I've checked to see if the file can
be accessed from the appropriate directory, but it looks as if my ISP won't
allow this.

I'm not sure what you mean by this. Is it just that if you go to
http://homepages.tesco.net/david.ryman/rats/video/ you get a 403 error
rather than a directory listing?

If so, you can change this if you want on a per directory basis. As your
server is running Apache (Response headers include Server: Apache/1.3.26
(Unix)), the following will almost certainly work (your web space
provider could have disabled the option but it's unlikely):

Create a file in the directory concerned, on the server, called
.htaccess (notice the initial dot) containing the line
Options +Indexes

See http://www.clockwatchers.com/htaccess_dir.html for further example.
If you want, create the file on your PC (though Windross will object to
the name, so you'd have to call it something else & rename it after
upload) & ftp it up using text mode transfer.

Alternatively, add a short html page which links directly to each file &
post its url here, or just post the url of every file. Earlier in this
thread I gave a link to one:

http://homepages.tesco.net/david.ryman/rats/video/basil%20the%20rat.wmv

Note the encoding of the spaces in the filename (%20) so that it's easy
for the email client & browser to know they're still part of the url.

Hope some of that is of use.

It would probably be quickest to use your last method. Rabbit: These should
all work:

Hi to Dave and the other techie types who tried to help me. It came
on and said this is a binary code what do you wan't to do, and it had
save to comp. highlighted. Basil the rat and eyes wide open have a
?wmr? behind it and then when I clicked on it it said error  couldn't
open film. this was quicktime. Since Macs are unix based maybe it can't
read it. I didn't get the last 3 letters right, but it did start with a
w. I will go back and look again. This is  kinda neat, sleuthing. Pam

:)

Linux is a Unix clone & can play Windows encoded video, so there should
be a solution for the Mac, I'm sure.

What version Mac OS does your machine use? Is it a PowerPC based Mac or
one of the new Intel based ones?

A quick google tells me there used to be a microsoft version of Windows
Media Player for the Mac, however support/development of that was
dropped a while ago. Versions will still be kicking around though.
Mickeysoft now endorse flip4mac...

I /think/ this is what you want: http://www.flip4mac.com/wmv_download.htm

And I /think/ the free trial version is enough for playback.

Failing everything else, if Dave wants & has hosting space, I'd be happy
to transcode the videos to an xvid based avi, which I think will be a
little less problematic for you.

Hi Dave, I got a thing about updating Quicktime so I did that, and
went and talked to a neighbor the looked at my mail and it had to be
restarted, so all that took a while. I'd be suprized if the Mac didn't
too. It very well could have, I don't have much help learning this
stuff. I also have a pc, but don't want to use it online, it's running
windows XP pro, and it's fast. I use it for my vision therapy program
and photos. I have a Mac OSX.4.7.  I also have 2 girl dumbo rats, about
10 mos. old and 2 boys, 11 wks. one fawn berkshire and one ruby eye
dumbo, pale gray or silver hooded. My one boy Kippy is allergic to all
bedding except cloth. He does fine on that and it's easy too, once I
made a bunch of small peices of cloth about 14x20 and hemmed around
them so they don't ravvle.ravel.    Rabbit
