Hi all,
I've been lurking for a while and have posted a couple of times, so I
thought it was about time I introduced myself.
My name is Dewi and I live in Brisbane, Australia. My husband and I
have adopted nine fantastic rats. We adopted our first 3 rats in 2004
and I was thrilled to discover how loving and amusing these creatures
are. If it weren't for their short lifespans, and their talent for
chewing carpet, I would consider rats to be the perfect pet.
Cheers,
Dewi.

I guess I should have mentioned the names of my rats. I'm not actually
familiar with the rat colours so this is how I describe them:
4 beige rats: Ginger Bear (a boy), Crackers, Lilly &Tigger (all girls).
A brown female named Bunny, 3 hooded females named Pickles, Chutney and
Puggles and a white male named Zac.
I'll try and organise some photos.
Cheers,
Dewi.

Welcome!!
I love it when lurkers decide to delurk and share their rattie stories
with us and best of all, pics!!
I remember when I was first considering rats as pets, one of the key
points was short lifespan. At the time, I was thinking: well, if I don't
like rats, then I'll only have them for a couple of years. Boy... did
that come back and bite me on the a$$. I'm so totally in love with my
rats and their short lifespan just kills me each and every time. And it
never gets easier. But one thing I find that helps, always have baby
ratties in the house!!!
And for the carpet thing, I ripped up all my carpets and put in tile
flooring for the rats. lol

Tiles are definately the way to go when you have pets in general.
Having learn't the expensive way.
Baby rats are fun, however I do like adult rats a tad more as they
actually slow down long enough for me to give them a good skritch.

Hey Dewi,
Welcome to Rats Addicts anonymous. You are in Aus? I am in NZ..:))
I became a Rat Owner without knowing the first thing about them, but
luckily for them I got stuck in and learnt all I could. Sadly, enough
to know that the boys that I had inherited had not been treated nicely
at all..:(( They have since gone to the Bridge and I have had many,
many more since then. I only have 9 now but there is a chance of a
couple of ladies on the horizon..(HURRY UP SPCA). !!! LOL. Like, you I
have Cats, Dogs, and 3 Kids. One busy household but its great.
Regards Kate

Hi Kate,
Yup, I'm is Aus (in Brisbane).
Do you rescue rats? 9 is the most I can handle at the moment.
Eventually I'll adopt more from the RSPCA.
Dewi.

Ummm no I don't actually rescue them as such, I just get offered them by
the Vet and she in turn is the Vet for the SPCA. Mind you when it comes
to these two that I am trying to get I have actually put myself forward.
Still waiting on that infernal phone call dammit..LOL
Regards Kate
P.S. Wouldn't mind some of your weather, we are freezing our butts off
here..:(

Welcome to the group Dewi! Yep, rats certainly do make terrific pets, for
adults and children alike! Our carpets have holes in them in a number of
places, my rats set to work just after the carpets had been laid so I had to
try and hide the damage from my fiance who had shelled out for them, lol. I
agree hard flooring is definitely the way to go with pets!
